Brush shouldn’t miss a beat in early season despite loss of John Hugley (2020)
The Brush High Arcs are poised for a big season this year. The squad returns its top nine players from last year’s team, which went 18-5 and 13-1 in the Western Reserve Conference but will start out this campaign missing its biggest player.
Post player John Hugley (2020), a 6’9” space eater who is one of the top ten players in the state in his class according to prephoops.com, will likely miss the season’s first two weeks with a foot injury, his coach Chet Mason confirmed.
Hugley injured the ankle during a scrimmage in late November. The Arcs have not missed a beat, according to Mason. They won scrimmages with Cleveland Heights, Cleveland Central Catholic, and Medina and St. Ignatius, Mason said, and Hugley did not play in those either.
Hugley has drawn interest from several Big Ten schools, including Michigan State. He has the big wide frame loved by some schools in the Big Ten and this summer worked off 40 pounds.

The Arcs will rely on the one-two punch of point guard D.J. Dial (2018) and 6’3” wing Andre Harris (2019) until Hugley returns. Dial and Harris are both mid-major Division I college prospects. While Hugley is out, Tyler Williams, a 6’5” forward, is expected to provide an inside force for the Arcs.
Brush opens its season on Dec. 1 when it plays Bedford and then plays again on Dec. 3 when it takes on Glenville at the Great Lakes Classic at Cleveland Heights High.
Mason believes his squad is primed for a big year, but must make sure it attends to the “little things.”
Mason said the coaching staff has been emphasizing that players pay particular attention to the details of the game in order to maximize performance.
The Arcs will emphasize defense. Mason sets a goal that his team’s limit its opponent to 10 points or less each quarter.
