Prospect Spotlight: Kyron Gibson (2019)
Currently checking in at No. 13 in Louisiana’s 2019 class, 6-foot combo-guard Kyron Gibson is set to take the reins for the defending state champion Peabody Warhorses.
He spent last season as a backup guard with the 3A champs, and now brings his playmaking ability to the forefront as the team’s starting point guard.
“Attacking the basket is one my my best strengths, and ball-handling. And I consider myself more of a point guard because I can make plays to make my teammates better,” said Gibson.
“I’m working on my 3-point shot, and my left-hand floaters, and my mid-range”
Gibson’s junior season at Peabody is now underway, and he says his leadership role has increased dramatically from a season ago.
“My coach wants make to take on the role as being the leader of the team,” said Gibson. “And so far I’ve been doing good taking on the leadership role.
Last season, Gibson played behind current Louisiana-Lafayette frosh Cedric Russell (PHLA’s 5th-ranked 2017), and says playing behind a D1 guard in practice everyday was a great experience.
“He (Russell) was one of the most competitive players I ever played against. He showed me everything in practice to get better and better,” said Gibson. “He always pushed me, and I pushed him, too,”
Now, with Gibson at the helm, the goal is simple: win back-to-back state titles.
“Last year we won the state championship, and I want to win another one this year. Our school has never won back-to-back titles, and I want to accomplish that,” said Gibson.
“Another goal is to make a triple-double in a game. I’ve never done that before.”
As for his recruitment, it’s been a little slow to start, but Louisiana College and Northwestern State have sent him mail. Gibson’s hoping to see that pickup next summer, and says he might play with Louisiana Elite 17U next spring.
“I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing; paying hard,” he said. “And hopefully some D1 colleges look at me.”
