Another season, so you know what that means, it is time for us to unveil the Prep Hoops Louisiana Top 25. This is the only place to get a Top 25 rankings of teams in Louisiana, regardless of class or division. All that we care about here are the wins and losses. We take into account mostly wins and losses over other quality teams. We are now a few weeks into the season, and every team on this list except for one (Riverside) has played at least one game. We always appreciate any feedback, so if you want to tell me I’m an idiot (Looking at you Coach Micah 🙂 ) reach out to us on twitter @PrepHoopsLa . Without further ado, here are the top 5.
- Madison Prep
Another year, another season, and once again Madison Prep is at the top of Louisiana basketball. They haven’t played any games in state as of yet, but they walked away 2-0 at the Lighthouse Classic in Mississippi, in a tournament that featured the best of the best that the south has to offer. Not very often can you lose a top 50 country in the nation, and come back even better the next year, but Madison Prep might have done it. They return three potential D1 seniors in Josh LeBlanc, Kobe Julien, and Jharon Whitfield, as well as the addition of Jahein Spencer, a top 10 player for the 2019 class that transferred in from Assumption.
- Landry-Walker
Landry-Walker is in the midst of one of the best runs in 5A history, and it doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon. After a somewhat surprising trek to a state championship last season, Landry-Walker seems to have righted the ship so far this year. They have just about everything you could ask for on a high school team. They have size that would make some college teams jealous with a pair of seniors in 6’8 Breshaun Delpit and 6’7 Semaj Matthews. They have shooters around their bigs, and a fantastic decision maker with the ball in his hands in 2019 Dywan Griffin. They are 2-0 on the year, and both of their wins have been absolute blowouts. They are going to be playing this weekend in the Showdown at the Lake at Hamilton Christian, with some of the absolute best teams in the state.
- Natchitoches Central
There were some questions surrounding Natchitotches Central coming into this season, as last year was the first time in three years that they didn’t make it to the state championsip game. This is also the first time in four years that they wouldn’t be lead by Brandon Rachal, who is now at LSU. But recent Northwestern St. signee Brian White seems to have quieted those questions, averaging nearly 25 points through four games, all of them coming in wins. They were able to blow out a pretty talented H.L. Bourgeious team, and were able to beat a very talented Bossier squad by 13.
- Scotlandville
Boy, is Javonte Smart good! While at a tournament in Texas, he was able to average 50 points a game over a two game stretch. I don’t care if that’s a small sample size, that is an absolutely astounding number, and it deserves as much national recognition that it has gotten. However, when you are able to slow him down, the Hornets are still young around him. In a surprising loss, Carencro was able to hold Javonte to only 12 points, and Scotlandville didn’t have enough help around him to overcome a low scoring performance. Reece Beekman is a very talented second option for them, but he is still only a sophomore. They suffered an upset early in the season, but I don’t see them taking many more L’s this season.
- Lafayette Christian
After reaching the final four for 3 seasons straight, LCA was able to capture their first state title last season, and they look to be on the same path this season. They are lead by high flying guard Greg Williams Jr., who recently signed his letter of intent with St. John’s. He is flanked by a couple of juniors that are capable of going off any night in TJ Jones and Kailen Thibodaux. Williams is able to facilitate to those two around him and either of those are capable of going for 30 any given night. Their only loss this season has been to Bossier in overtime at the Paul Milsaps Classic.
