Five Burning Questions: WT Woodson vs. Wakefield
ARLINGTON, VA — After a slow start, Wakefield pulled off an impressive comeback victory at home against DMV Top 30 No. 28 WT Woodson last night. Below we tackle five burning questions after a hotly contested season opener.
WHO WAS THE BEST PLAYER ON THE FLOOR?
This is an interesting question, because if we asked this question at halftime, the answer would be Nate Spurlock. Woodson’s unsigned 6-foot-7 senior scored all 10 of his team’s points in the first quarter, and had 12 at the halftime break as his team held a nine point advantage. Spurlock would go on to score a game-high 21 points. Amari Cooper (the best player on the floor last night), had a quiet first half, but sparked his team to a massive come from behind win. The unsigned 6-foot-5+ senior pumped in all 21 of his points in the second half, and added 12 rebounds. Cooper gave tireless effort, and sparked his team to an important win.
WHAT HAPPENED TO MATT URBACH?
JMU commit Matt Urbach had an off night shooting the ball. We (unofficially) had him for five points on one of seven from the field, and two of two from the line. Ben Horsford, a senior guard at Wakefield, did a really good job pressuring Urbach and not giving him much room. Urbach did leak open late in the first half and drill a three in the corner. One thing we did appreciate from Urbach was his consistent effort. Despite his off shooting night, he recorded two steals (one of which would have led to a breakaway dunk had he not been fouled), and three rebounds. He worked hard to keep plays alive for his team, and showed a competitive edge.
WHERE DID CHINGUUN GAMBOLD COME FROM?
Chinguun Ganbold, listed as a 6-foot-3 junior on Woodson’s roster, scored 10 impressive points off the bench last night. The junior combo guard is skilled, crafty, and creative around the basket. Gambold was a standout on the JV team last season, and performed very well during Woodson’s run in the second quarter. He also came into the game late and provided outstanding energy and more offense for the Cavs.
WHEN WILL NATE SPURLOCK COMMIT?
CNU was in last night to see Nate Spurlock. The 6-foot-7 southpaw, who is being recruited by various schools of all levels, says he plans to play out the season before he makes his final decision. Spurlock may also be considering a prep year.
WHY DID WE UNDERRATE WAKEFIELD?
Good question. Year in and year out, Warriors Head Coach Tony Bentley finds a way to get his guys to consistently compete at a high level. With the departure of seniors Alan Treakle and Halil Parks, we didn’t expect them to have this type of firepower this early in the season. Credit junior Chris Warner for stepping up and knocking down shots, Horsford for his perimeter defense, and Cooper for his brilliant all around play.
