Recruiting Report: Matthew Lawrence (2018)
Heritage 6-foot-5 senior guard Matthew Lawrence and his teammates expect to surprise a lot of people in Colorado this winter.
A year ago Heritage was a few games under .500 but the goal is improvement this season. For that to happen Lawrence participated in several basketball events including a 17U season with Chaos plus several camps.
“This offseason I played AAU with Colorado Chaos,” Lawrence said. “I did a lot of training with Nick Graham and another trainer Fuex Davis and I played summer for Heritage in the Chap league, Metro team camp, the UNC team camp, and the C3 challenge.”
Matthew wants to be more versatile as a senior both on and off the floor.
“Since last season I have worked on getting stronger as a player, driving to the basket more instead of playing as just a spot up shooter, and really worked on being a leader on the court,” Matthew said.
The Heritage group enjoys playing with one another and has a balance among the team that is not always there.
“This year I expected us to surprise a lot of people,” Lawrence said. “Our team plays well together and we have great chemistry on and off the court. We all really like each other and no one thinks they are just better than everyone else. Everyone has been doing a great job playing their role on the team to help us get better.”
What does Matt want to get from this season? Wins and to be a model of success and hard work for his club.
“My individual goal this winter is to be the best leader I can for this team and do anything I can to help us win games,” Matt said. “Our team goal this year is to improve everyday and hopefully make a run in the playoffs.”
Lawrence has good size for a guard and has heard from schools but will likely receive most of his attention during the winter. Some schools are calling now.
“A few colleges have contacted me,” Lawrence explained. “I have gotten a few texts from Colorado College. I have been asked to and applied to Doane University and plan to take a visit there as soon as I can.”
