Prospect Spotlight: Hunter Wilson (2018)
Keota has been one of the more successful teams in Iowa since we started this Prep Hoops Iowa endeavor in 2014. And this season, it’ll be 5-foot-10 guard Hunter Wilson who will carry the torch for the Eagles.
Wilson is the team’s leading returning scorer, he notched 12.4 points per game on last season’s 17-win team.
We recently caught up with the experienced guard, and he mentioned what his playing style is, and what he’s been working most to improve this offseason.
“The past couple years I’ve been a 3-point shooter mostly. But since we lost some guys from last year, I’m going to have to work on my inside game, too,” said Wilson.
“For our team this year, we only have a couple guys over 6-foot, so I’m going to have to work on my boxing out and grabbing rebounds. And I’ve gotten a lot better at driving to the hoop lately.”
With three of the Eagles’ four leading scorers from a season ago graduating, some people might be expecting them to have a down year. But we’re picking them to win their division of the South Iowa Cedar League.
Keota is a program that doesn’t rebuild, it reloads. Wilson will lead the charge.
“This year is going to be a lot different for us, because last year we had a lot of guys that could shoot the 3. And we’re going to have to run up and down the court a lot this year, and we’re going to have to box out and rebound,” said Wilson.
“I’d like to get first team all-conference, that’d be a great goal for me. I’ve worked really hard the past four years and have never gotten an award, and I’ve put in a lot of time and I think I can get that this year.”
As for his future, it’s wide-open right now. No schools have reached out to the productive small-school prospect. He’s hoping that changes soon.
“I don’t have any interest, but if I got some from anywhere, I’d be interested in playing,” said Wilson. “I love the game of basketball, if I did happen to get an offer, I’d definitely love it.”
