5 takeways from Guerin Catholic vs. Cathedral Scrimmmage
High school basketball is finally getting underway with scrimmages this week and we could not be more excited. Saturday morning was the first of my doubleheader as I went over to Cathedral to watch them scrimmage Guerin Catholic at 10 a.m. I wanted to see how my 4A state prediction fared in their first test of another team.
Cathedral easily handled Guerin in the first quarter 37-13 but after than Cathedral kind of came back to earth and played even the rest of the way. They still easily cruised to the “win” 81-57. Cathedral played athletic and shot the ball really well all game to lead them to the win. I look back at my five main takeaways from this morning. Stats: Cathedral vs. Guerin Catholic Stats
Cathedral has a ton of scoring options
Cathedral has a plethora of scorers headed by Ball State commit Jarron Coleman. Everyone in their starting five can score as they accounted for all but two points of their output. After their starting five they will struggle to score but they are going to have at least two guys who can score on the court at all times. Coleman led all scorers with 26 points on a very efficient 10-of-15 from the floor. Armaan Franklin followed with 22 points and he was 5-for-5 inside the arc and made his way to the rim pretty easily. These two guys are going to put up a ton of points and I haven’t said anything about Justin Hensley…
Justin Hensley has a clip and he’s going to make a ton of threes
Hensley was on fire today going 7-of-10 from deep to score 21 points. He couldn’t miss and at one time he hit four straight in the first quarter. He loves the wing and corner and will sit there waiting for the pass out. Hensley is going to be open a lot this year as Cathedral will drive and kick it out to him all day long. He’s a guy who’s just going to get better as right now he is just primarily playing outside the three point line and when he draws the defender out he’ll eventually be able to drive in past him. He’ll take that huge jump forward when he begins to drive more.
The defense of Cathedral is much better than I was expecting
Cathedral’s guard hounded Guerin Catholic all day long forcing 19 turnovers. This is something I wasn’t really expecting but they used their length and jumped the passing lanes all day forcing turnovers. The only downside is multiple times they turned it right back over but that’s because they were playing a little bit too fast. Cathedral is going to cause havoc the entire year on defense even though they may struggle on the boards. Wouldn’t be surprised if they forced 15 or more turnovers a game this year.
The inside duo of Jack Hansen and Zach Munson are going to be really good for Guerin
The two inside guys of Guerin will carry the load for them this year as they lost a few guards and that really showed today. Combined they scored 35 points and pulled in 18 rebounds. Hansen is more of a guy that can stretch it out and shoot the three where Munson is a guy that will just overpower and use his footwork to score inside. They are going to make up the bulk of the scoring for Guerin and they did good work inside this morning.
Guerin Catholic is going to really need to work on their guard play to be successful
Guerin didn’t get any help from their guards and they are really going to have to work on that aspect this year. Only one guard that played much last year is still on the roster and they bring in a couple new guys to the varsity roster. That showed today although playing Cathedral probably didn’t give off the best first impression. Their guards combined for 17 points and 14 turnovers. They are gonna have to get after their guards if they want to have a successful season.
