Recruiting Report: Ben Obert (2019)
Coon Rapids-Bayard will have a mostly new-look squad this winter, but one thing remains the same; Ben Obert will be at the helm.
As a sophomore, the 6-foot-3 guard was sensational, averaging 18.6 points per game on 52 percent shooting. Now, an upperclassmen, he’s starting to see some local small school recruitment come his way.
“I’ve gotten the most interest so far from Wartburg, and I go a letter from Briar Cliff about two months ago. Other than that, I’ve just gotten a lot of invites to camps and stuff like that this past summer,” said Obert.
“I’m just being patient with that recruitment stuff though, and I’m just going to focus on this upcoming season, and it’ll all take care of itself.”
With great size, and skill to boot, Obert is a guy that can play almost anywhere on the floor. He refined his skill-set, and what it is that makes him such a threat.
“I just think I’m a pretty versatile guy, I can play many positions of the court,” he said. “My IQ is pretty good, and I’ve really worked on my shot these past couple summers.”
Obert has been part of a very talented 2019 Iowa Cornsharks group these past couple of summers, and says the group — despite not playing together this past July — will be back at it next summer for a 17U season.
“It was really great playing with all those guys, they’re a fun group to play with. We played very well and sometimes we played down to our competition,” he said. “This coming year we’re going to give it another shot, and we could be really good, people should be looking out for us.”
But first, he has his junior season ahead with the Crusaders, and he says they should surprise some people.
“This year is going to be completely different, we lost a lot of seniors from last year. I’m the only returning starter from last season, and I’m the only guy who’s had varsity experience, basically,” said Obert.
“I’ve really just been trying to get my teammates to buy into the the process. And we have some guys who will step up, and I think people will be shocked at how good we could be.”
