The Outlet: Some takeaways from Edmond Santa Fe Big Saturday Scrimmage
There was a plethora of talent that filled up the gym at Edmond Santa Fe. It was a great opportunity for teams to see where they are in the early development of this 2017-18 season. Here are a few takeaways from Saturday’s action.
Edmond is going to be interesting
All of the Edmond schools participated in the action on Saturday and it was blatantly apparent that Edmond is going to represent well at the end of the season.
The defending 6A champions Edmond North looked solid seeing as how they lost most of their roster from last year. However, you could see the potential of their young talent including 2019 guard Cooper Peterson.
Edmond Santa Fe had a good showing where you got to see 2018 Tauriawn Knight be as aggressive as he was in the summer. Knight lived at the free throw line due to his speed and physicality while going down hill. Knight also hit a game-winning three to defeat PC West.
2019 Ben Smith also had a good day even though he seemed to settle for jumpers at times. Santa Fe is deep with talent especially on the perimeter which will be interesting to see how they complement each other.
Edmond Memorial is the least talented of the three local schools but they are well-coached and they seem to always overachieve. They played with great effort on Saturday and showed growing execution of their game plans.
The Bulldogs will be in the mix at the end of the year if 2019 forward Drew Tennial and 2019 guard Peyton Caldwell can give consistent production.
PC West is young but they have what it takes to win big
West struggled defensively all day but that is usual with a young basketball team. However, they showed that their young talent isn’t scared to mix it up with their older peers. 2020 Rondlel Walker didn’t shoot the ball well from deep but did a good job of creating off the bounce.
2021 Tobias Roland was impressive on the offensive end even throwing one down with power in transition. West is inexperienced but they have the depth and talent to create chaos in 6A.
Westmoore is a sleeper to keep an eye on
Westmoore is a team that wont be highly ranked heading into the season but they will be a team to reckon with when February comes around. Their star guard 2018 Will Graham is still recovering but has made his way back on the floor. It will take him a bit to get back to his old self but he will get it back.
The Jaguars also have legit size with 2018 Jackson Dyer and 2021 Jalen Breath who are both 6’8 and mobile. Dyer had a good summer and it looked like he carried that over into Saturday where he was effective in the painted area.
Heritage Hall can be scary
Heritage Hall has great amount of talent on the wings including the best player in the 2021 class Trey Alexander. Alexander is coming into high school ball with alot of hype but it is deserved. You could see as such Saturday as he was getting the rim with ease. He has a slender build but plays alot stronger than he looks.
HH also has2018 guard Jon Matthews who is recovering from injury but will be back healthy soon. As the point guard, Matthews has alot of offensive weapons at his disposal. HH has everything it takes to win the 4A championship.
