2020 Top Illinois PGs
The point guard group is the strength of the 2020 class right now with the top two prospects overall and five of the top seven. Here we breakdown the best point guards in the 2020 class.
Adam Miller (Morgan Park)
Overall Ranking: #1
Travel Team: Mac Irvin Fire
The 6’4” point guard is an explosive player with size and incredible handles. I think his ball handling against quality athletes was what impressed most when we saw him this fall. Plays with a great flare for the game. Electric passer that makes some incredible dishes. He takes a lot of threes and at times you could say he forces them, but he displays that that is definitely a weapon in his game that will be adequate going forward. Hits them both off the catch and pulling up. Big time high-major recruit.
DJ Steward (Fenwick)
Overall Ranking: #2
Travel Team: Meanstreets
The 6’1” point guard has good length and feel out on the perimeter. Silky smooth game with his handles, passing, and scoring. Steward is developing into a very good pull up shooter from three. Loves to use ball screens and shoot behind them drilling deep shots. He has the creativity and handles to get where he wants on the floor. Mixes in a variety of scoop shots and runners. Defensively we really like what he brings to the table being able to block shots of opposing guards and get steals. One of the elite prospects in Illinois and a no doubt high-major recruit.
Tyler Beard (Whitney Young)
Overall Ranking: #5
Travel Team: Meanstreets
Beard really helped his stock this fall in a variety of camps. It was the best we have ever seen the Whitney Young 2020 prospect. What impressed us most was how he showed off his complete floor game. Got to the hoop with his speed and burst off the bounce. Also used that athleticism in the open floor where he was a tough cover. His jump shot is definitely a major improving weapon. He hit from three throughout the Pangos camp at a nice clip especially pulling up off the bounce. Passes it well and proved he can be a point guard at the college level. Mid-major plus/high-major prospect.
Reggie Strong (Farragut)
Overall Ranking: #6
Travel Team: Young & Reckless
Strong is a lefty point guard that is long and wiry. He impacts the game with his tenacity on both ends. Defensively he uses his length and anticipation to get steals and get into his man causing havoc. Strong has the ability to get in the lane consistently with his crossover and quick first step. Jump shot continues to improve each time we see him especially from three. Excels playing in an up and down game where he can make plays in transition. Mid-major prospect at this stage, but has high-major upside.
Elliot Sieger (Whitney Young)
Overall Ranking: #7
Travel Team: Illinois Wolves
I think you have to be impressed with the maturity Sieger has for the game at a young age. Calm and composed with the ball in his hands. Will need to add strength to his slight frame as time goes on to play at the college level. Makes sound decisions with the ball and gets others involved. As a scorer he can hit a three, but it has a bit of a slow release. They tend to go in at a solid clip though. Good ball handler that should continue to improve as a scorer throughout his career as he already puts up solid numbers early in his development. Mid-major prospect.
PJ Edwards (Springfield Lanphier)
Overall Ranking: #12
Travel Team: Team RWA
The 6’3” guard has good strength and athleticism at the guard spot. He pushes it in transition and gets to the rim. Best when he can get a head of steam behind him and take it at the hoop. Gets to the hoop and finishes through contact. Drive and kick ability. Rebounds well from the two guard position on both ends of the floor. Should have a big year at Lanphier and it wouldn’t shock us if by mid-season he became their best player. D1 prospect that we see as a solid mid-major at this stage.
Donovan Newby (Bloom)
Overall Ranking: #17
Travel Team: Illinois Wolves
Newby was the straw that stirred the drink for the Illinois Wolves 15U last summer. This Bloom point guard runs the show. Good feel for the game and does a nice job of getting others involved. Confident leader on the floor. He has shown he is a capable jump shooter. A bit of a set shot as it takes little to get it off, but he makes them at a solid clip. Newby is a D1 prospect.
Jack Kahoun (Oswego)
Overall Ranking: #31
Travel Team: Illinois Wolves
Kahoun is a plus shooter from all over the floor. The combo guard drills them off the catch and can hit pull ups as well. This is the strength of his game. Has a chance to be a big time shot maker over the next three years. Makes crisp passes and moves well away from the ball playing the point guard position. Competes on D and moves well laterally.
Marcus Watson (Morgan Park)
Overall Ranking: #34
Travel Team: Mac Irvin Fire
Watson loves to be in attack mode. He is quick and shifty with the ball in his hands. Gets in the lane where he converts acrobatic finishes at the rim. Solid passer and has a knack for getting to the line. Streaky shooter that can get hot on occasion from three. Pesky defender against opposing lead guards.
Alec Millender (St. Rita)
Overall Ranking: #35
Travel Team: ET21 Buckeyes
Long and rangy point guard with a tremendous feel for the game. Slick passer that has an advanced feel for the game and getting others involved. Smooth in the pick and roll making quality decisions with the ball. Handles it well and has a lot of potential.
Dan Florey (St. Ignatius)
Overall Ranking: #36
Travel Team: Chicago Lockdown
Florey is a rangy 6’3” point guard that has a high skill level. He can really shoot the ball from the perimeter with easy range out to the three point line. Handles it well and is a solid passer from the lead guard spot. Athleticism is making strides. Will need to continue to get stronger.
