Prospect Spotlight: Cade Winkel (2020)
A versatile and athletic 6-foot-4 forward, Cade Winkel has proven he’s one of Iowa’s best 2020 prospects, and looks to continue his rise this winter as a sophomore with the Golden Bears.
Iowa’s 33rd-ranked 2020, Winkel pairs above the rim capability with an array of offensive skills to make him one of the state’s biggest threats.
“I’d say one of my strengths is my ball-handling for my size, I don’t come up against many 6’4 guys who are as strong and big as me who can handle it like I can. And I also think my versatility is a strength. I can go down and score on people taller than me, or take them outside of the lane and drive on them,” said Winkel, who mentioned one area he’l looking to improve.
“I need to work on my 3-point shooting, I’m not as reliable from there as I’d like to be,”
He spent his spring playing with with All Iowa Attack 15U, and then played with a top Minnesota program, Howard Pulley, during the summer.
Winkel says playing with and against some of the nation’s best competition better prepared him for his upcoming sophomore season.
“I played pretty well, I really improved my defense a lot. Playing AAU against such good competition, you always have to be good on D, and that really helped my game.”
And after averaging 13.8 points on 68 percent shooting last season, he’ll look to improve as a sophomore — there’s a couple very specific goals he has in mind.
“I’m hoping I can average a lot more assists this year,” said Winkel. “Maybe throw some alley-oops, we’ve got about seven players that can get up and dunk.”
