Get your guard up: Northeast Ohio is loaded with 1’s and 2’s
Happy Halloween. It’s just a few days before the ghosts and goblins take over the streets in their yearly search for treats and candy.
I thought I’d scare up a list of the top five guards in Northeast Ohio as the 2017-18 season gets ready to tip off.
In no particular order here they are:
Sincere Carry (2018), Solon. A longtime scorer, Carry, 5’11”was an all-district pick for the Comets as a junior. Explosive off the dribble and a blur in transition, Carry is a crafty finisher at the rim and has the ability to create space to get off a mid-range jump shot.
Dwayne Cohill, (2018), Holy Name, this do-it-all 6’3” guard is ranked as No. 4 player in the state in his class by prephoops.com. Cohill puts on a show every game with his high flying skills. Has already committed to Dayton. Can shoot, get to the rim, defend and lead.
Yahel Hill (2018), the 5’10” point guard from Cleveland Heights continues that school’s tradition of producing elite talent at the 1. A crafty scorer who can finish in a variety of ways, he can also connect on spot-up jumpers at a lethal rate. Strong, strong handle. Should be a total package as he’s now a senior and been starting for three years. Prephoops.com ranks him No. 25 overall in the state in Class of 2018.
Dale Bonner (2018), Shaker Heights is a coach’s dream. Loves to defend and is a great teammate. He can distribute the ball on offense and get his own off the bounce.
Alfonse Hale (2018), Maple Heights. Has been a starter for going on four years and was an all-district selection as a year ago. Great competitor, who went toe-to-toe with Bonner last year in a tournament game, in which Maple Heights came up just short. Maple Heights has a loaded backcourt as Marcus Kimmie and Julian Whiteside (transfer from Garfield Heights). join Hale in the Mustangs’ backcourt.
Others to see; St. Edward has two outstanding sophomores in Grant Huffman and Montorie Foster. Meechie Johnson at Garfield Heights and Seth Wilson are two great freshman guards everyone raves about Euclid sophomore 6’0” Garvin Clarke.
