2018 F Wilyum Omer talks transfer to Godby and senior season ahead
2018 forward Wilyum Omer made the move down to Godby from United Township (Illinois).
The 6’5″, 175-pounder made his varsity debut for United Township last year but says he didn’t feel like he was getting the playing time he warranted.
“It was my first year playing varsity and I felt like I was the best player on the team but the coach was big on seniority so I didn’t get the opportunity that I thought I deserved,” Omer told Prep Hoops Florida.
In terms of his projected role at Godby, he says he believes he’ll have a big senior season. The Cougars went 25-2 a year ago, advancing to the Class 6A region semifinal. They graduated five seniors including 6’9″ forward Corbin Merritt, who is now at Daytona State.
“We have a pretty good team and I think I’ll be given a big role and which I feel like I most definitely deserve,” he said. “I’m prepared for everything whether it’ll be getting buckets, locking up opposing best defenders or getting every rebound. I’m going to do what I gotta do as a winner to win every game and get that state championship.”
Omer has spent this summer focused on improving his game. He trains with Majak Wenyin of So Elite Basketball, doing two a days developing his skills, stamina and body.
He has played with Kingdom Hoops over the last year and a half for travel ball.
Omer started playing basketball at age of 11. He pointed to his shooting, scoring and playmaking as his biggest strengths. He’s looking to improve his motor and defensive ability.
No offers have come yet for the senior, but he’s drawn interest from Southern Alabama, Central Arkansas, Kennesaw State, Bethune-Cookman and Drake.
Omer should fit in nicely for an always successful Godby program. He’s lengthy and has the ability to work inside well. Let’s see what Omer can do for the new look Cougars.
