Recruiting Report: Jack Kelley (2019)
Currently Iowa’ s 70th-ranked 2019, Don Bosco 6-foot point guard Jack Kelley has proven he’s on of the state’s best young guards, and should see some considerable improvement this winter after a summer of individual workouts.
There’s been several Division II and Division III programs that have already identified the talented junior as a potential college prospect.
“It’s pretty much just been emails and camp invites. I got invited to come out to Central Missouri, and that was fun, and I walked around campus a little bit. And then I played at Upper Iowa and Loras has emailed a couple times and I went there for an elite camp as well,” said Kelley.
He says it’s his ability to rack up assists and get to the basket that makes him a special talent.
“This summer I’ve been working to add strength in the weight room and that’s been going really good. And for my high school team I just like to facilitate and get everyone involved, and that’s one of my strengths,” said Kelley. “And I’ve been working on my pull-up game a lot this summer too, and just finishing around the basket”
This offseason, he started with Martin Brothers 16U, and ended the summer working out on his own and attending elite camps.
“We got a new weight training coach, so I was in there a lot with him,” said Kelley. “And then I worked a lot on my ball-handling, and just simple drills to get my handles up and stuff like that. And I was working with my team three days a week over the summer.”
Last season, as a sophomore, Kelley was outstanding while averaging 12.4 points and a team-high 5.5 assists per game.
This season, in addition to upping his production, he’ll looking to take the reins as the leader of the team.
“This year I need to be a lot more of a leader than I was last year. I kind of left it up to some juniors and seniors last year, but this year I need to be more of a vocal leader on the court.”
As for his recruitment, he’s going to take care of things this season with Don Bosco, and is confident the college interest will follow.
“It is something that’s on my mind, and I think about it. But as of right now, I just really want to focus on my team and the recruitment will happen,” said Kelley. “For now, I really just want to focus on this season.”
