Recruiting Report: Guy Schmidt (2018)
Guy Schmidt (2018), a 5’11” point guard from The Wellington School, suffered an injury to his knee during school ball this summer. However, Schmidt’s recovery has been coming along smoothly.
“We had a June practice and my knee was just throbbing and I could barely make cuts or make any moves. So, we went to the doctor and got an MRI or a scan. It showed degenerated tears in my left patella tendon. We just had to go through the process of physical therapy and then I eventually got surgery,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt and the Jaguars enter 2017-18 with the goal making it back to The Schott. Last season, Wellington lost in the Division IV State Championship to Lutheran East.
Fortunately for Wellington, Schmidt expects to be ready for their season opener against Upper Arlington.
“I’m definitely going to be out there,” Schmidt said.
Wellington returns four starters from last year’s team. This season, they’ll compete in Division III, where they should be in the hunt for a Regional Championship again. According to Schmidt, he’ll have to score a bit more for them this winter.
“I was more of a passer last year. More of a floor general, just getting everyone to the right spot … I think I’m going to have to score the basketball a little more than last year,” Schmidt said. He averaged 4.8 points last year.
Schmidt has excellent court-vision. This Wellington roster is a nice fit for him, as they can surround the arch with catch-and-shoot threats. Schmidt is very good at making a move to get in the lane and then find the open man. But, from the sounds of it, his mid-range and 3-point game have improved in the offseason.
“Me and the gun have become really good friends this year. I’ve been just trying to get this pull-up. The pull-up and the 3-point set feet,” Schmidt said.
The lefty told Prep Hoops that he’s also working on his right hand.
If Schmidt establishes himself as a threat to score and drive either direction, passing lanes will become even wider. As Schmidt continues to add pieces to his game, the 2.6 GPA student-athlete is boosting his stock as Division III prospect.
“I have a couple of talks with Otterbein. I actually visited Tampa University this summer … I think that’s it right now. But I definitely think my recruitment is going to catch up during the season,” Schmidt said. He later clarified that he and his family plan on waiting until after the season to make a college decision.
When the time comes, Schmidt is most concerned with how he fits into a program’s structure.
“I really just base it off on how I’m going to be in the program. Like, what am I going to do to affect the program,” Schmidt said.
At the moment, Otterbein seems to be the most enthusiastic about recruiting Schmidt.
“Coach [Brian] Oilar says I’m going to be playing a lot if I came to Otterbein next year. He definitely said I’m make a big impact,” Schmidt said.
While Otterbein seems to pass Schmidt’s checklist of what he’s looking for in a school, there’s plenty of time for other schools to get involved. As Wellington has more team success this season, we expect a few more in-state programs to check out Schmidt.
