Recruiting Report: Kevin Charles (2018)
A player that I expect to surprise a ton of people in the state this year is 6’8 F Kevin Charles of Crescent City. Kevin was a transfer from Lutheran High School, so he wasn’t able to play last season, but practiced and worked hard everyday to get better. “Since last year ended, I’ve been working really hard. I’ve been working on my handles, shooting, and post moves, and I’ve definitely gotten a lot better. I’ve also been working on putting weight on and working out more. I drink protein powder and eat peanut butter sandwiches throughout the day.”
Kevin had a really good summer playing with startup grassroots program New Orleans Basketball Club, who played on the Powerade Platform. “I started off rusty, but I stepped up as the season went along, and the team got better as a result.” Kevin describes his role as “Dependable. They rely on me to score down low, but also play on the perimeter. On defense, my job was to protect the rim.”
Crescent City is coming off the first state title in school history, and have added some talent, so are the odds on favorite to repeat as champions. The 2018 class for them is going to be very impressive, with Terrance Smith, Devonta Harris, and Emir Carter all joining Kevin Charles, as well as top 5 2020 guard Byron Joshua to lead the show. With all of that talent, Crescent City is going to have the chance to compete not only with the best of class B, but with the best of the best that the state has to offer.
Despite not playing high school ball as a junior, the combination of playing well with grassroots ball as well as elite camps has allowed Kevin’s recruitment to begin to take off. “So far, I have offers to Xavier, BRCC, and LSUA.” When asked what he is looking for at the next level, Kevin said “Of course I am trying to get to a D1. I would like to try to stay close to home and to my family, but ultimately neither of those are a deal breaker.”
