Mr. Basketball Candidate: John Newman
Clemson commit John Newman will make a run at Mr. Basketball for the state this season. The Greensboro Day product is one of the most impressive players in the 2018 class because he brings it on both ends of the floor. He is two-way player that can bring it as a scorer and is a defensive problem.
John Newman recorded a team-high 18 points in a win vs. Boo Williams on Friday Night.Newman helped lead Greensboro Day to the NCISAA 3-A state title last season and will look to re-peat this season.Newman has won two state championships and the Bengals have gone 95-12 in his three seasons on the varsity squad. He has been named to the NCISAA All-State team twice.
He spent the summer playing with Team CP3 on the Nike EYBL circuit. He will team up at Clemson with his Team CP3 teammate Hunter Tyson who also verbally committed to the Tigers.
Standing 6-foot-6, Newman can defend multiple positions on the defensive end and is a knock down shooter from the mid-range and out.
Newman chose Clemson over Providence, Virginia and Wake Forest. One of the biggest intangibles as to why Newman is such a coveted recruit was his winning ability. He wins at every level that he has been at and will continue to do so in the college level. He has a great work ethic and knows what it takes to win. He is a level-headed young man that will be a coaching dream.
