Region Preview: 5A Metro
Last year the 5A Metro region was the toughest in the state. Sunnyslope and Apollo were projected to make it to the state championship, and they followed through. Although Apollo won the first two match-ups, they were unsuccessful in the state championship against Sunnyslope. In addition to Sunnyslope, 5 of the 6 teams made it to the state tournament and all advanced to the round of 16.
Although this group might not be as strong as last year, there is still plenty of talent and reason to believe it is the top region in 5A once again.
Region Preview: 5A Metro
1. Sunnyslope
Sunnyslope returns every player from last years state championship team. In addition, they possessed one of the top JV teams in the state which was loaded with Freshman. This team should be poised to win the 5A Metro region as well as potentially a state championship. Kyle Fischer is the key to the team. He does a little bit of everything for the group and his toughness sets the tone for the group. Further, Chris Orzoco is solid on the block. He does a great job of getting deep seals and finishing around the rim. Further, Bryson Mewhinney and Allan Abayev will play crucial roles for this team. In addition to the well-known players who have led Sunnyslope to two state championship appearances in a row, keep an eye on Chance Garland and Paul Hayden.
2. Apollo
Many thought that Apollo would be down this upcoming season due to losing Dre Marin and Holland Woods as well as key role player Jeff Perez. However, Apollo might have the most talented player in the region with Emmanuel Taban. Moreover, the group has a number of talented incoming freshman and transfers. This group has a lot of athleticism and potential. It might take time for them to get a rhythm and figure out their new roles. With that said, it will help greatly that they have Taban to lead the way as the rest of the team finds their way.
3. Ironwood
There is a lot of potential with this group. Ajang Aguek and Dhol Majak bring the team plenty of length and shooting. These two will be crucial to the team’s success offensively and defensively. Their ability to protect the rim will enable the team to make mistakes and still have reliable back side help. In addition to Aguek and Majak, Tyrese Eugene figures to be a three year starter for the group who can attack the rim as well as anyone in the state. Further, he has a nice shot off of the dribble. Lastly, Dominic Gonzalez had a huge summer for the group and will play a key role as a 2020 prospect.
