GWOC National East Preseason Preview
Wayne appears to be the favorite this year and with 3 D1 athletes on roster will likely be one of the toughest teams in the state. This division is wide open and any of these teams can move anywhere. Here is a look at the division for 2017-18.
Beavercreek– Beavercreek had the potential last season to make some serious postseason noise. Instead, injuries plagued the Beavers and an early postseason exit was the end result. This time around, Coach Hess’ squad is healthy and ready for another run. Jon Alessandro (2018) is the top returner and will be the go-to guy this season.
Centerville– The Elks made a run to the District final one year ago, but a repeat appearance will be quite difficult this time around. Both leading scorers are now graduated and leaves a big gap in the Elks scoring. Donnie Shelton (2018) and Jevon Henderson (2018) are the two biggest returnees and will be asked to fill those holes. Many new faces will be joining the varsity this season making Centerville a potential dark horse.
Fairmont– The Firebirds went 10-13 last season, but look to rebound and compete in 2017-18. 4 of 5 starters return giving the Firebirds experience at the varsity level. The backcourt is quite impressive with Jack Hendricks (2018) being one of the top names back there. The frontcourt will be improved and Dylan Crutchfield (2018) is a name to watch. The biggest issue for this team will be whether they can play consistent every night.
Springfield– The Wildcats finished 23-4 a year ago and look to continue this dominance into this season. Leonard Taylor (2018) returns as well as several other young players to give the Wildcats one of the fastest teams in the city. There are questions about the backcourt depth as the two starters from last season graduated, but one thing the Wildcats will excel at is dominating the glass as they have a very strong frontcourt to make up for it.
Wayne– Wayne had loads of potential last season, but injuries late in the season hurt them and held the Warriors back. This time around with a new coach as well, Wayne looks to be the favorite yet again. Darius Quisenberry (2018) and Deshon Parker (2018) make up arguably the best backcourt in the GWOC and L’Christian Smith (2018) is a fantastic athlete on both ends of the floor. The biggest question will be how their young players play and mold together with returning veterans.
- Wayne– Three Division 1 athletes make this team elite and a heavy favorite.
- Springfield– They have speed and depth, questions about the backcourt.
- Beavercreek– If healthy, Alessandro will be top player; give Beavers a chance at competing.
- Centerville– Replacing two leading scorers will be difficult; will need younger guys to step up.
5. Fairmont– They have a lot of experience, but consistency will be a huge questi
