Recruiting Report 2019: Dylin Borden
Dylin Borden, 5’10” PG, 2019. Annapolis Area Christian School Eagles. Severn, MD.
AAU Team : Mid Atlantic Select 16U
We got our 2nd look at Dylin at the Prep Hoops 250 Expo on 9-17-17 in Owings Mill, MD at The beautiful McDonogh School located just outside of Baltimore, MD. He looked much improved since we last saw him in early April & impressed us with his PG skill set & very high IQ. Dylin’s speed & quickness are very deceiving due to his smooth style of play, but he can go. He has some playing style similarities to Steve Nash (Suns), Chris Paul (CP3), Mark Price (Cavs) & BJ Armstrong who played CG for the Chicago Bulls during the Michael Jordan era. He is a superb ball-handier& in the full court Dylin utilizes a change of pace, a hesitation & go or he can bring his defender close him where he gets into high gear very fast for a blow bye. We saw Dylin grab a defensive rebound where from a near standstill he accelerated very fast bursting past the defense 94 feet on sheer speed. Dylin is a True PG & floor general who is considered as pass first player. He keeps his head up & can deliver some elite passes such as an off the dribble no look one handed pass inside the paint for an easy basket. Dylin can successfully complete lightning fast touch passes after he has just received the ball & in one motion make a cross court pass to the wing or to the post. Playing for Annapolis Area Christian Area Christian & Mid Atlantic select, Dylin directs the offense with great precision utilizing his superb court vision & high IQ. He instructs his teammates to create proper spacing & execute fast ball movement. AACS runs a dribble ball motion offense & Dylin knows when to split double teams & zone traps then make the correct play. He can deliver pinpoint passes off the dribble such as kick outs, drop offs & entry passes in a very timely manner.
While Dylin is true PG, he can score from all 3 levels with a very diverse offensive arsenal. His perimeter & 3 point shots are deadly & Dylin can knock down shots from anywhere on the floor with his soft shot. He squares up very well with picture perfect shot mechanics & can score from spot ups or on the ball. His release can be ultra quick when needed & Dylin gets very good elevation on his shot which he can drill from beyond the college 3 point line. He has excellent ball fakes, after which Dylin can go straight up for his shot or dribble penetrate. From any location, Dylin can utilize his hesitation crossover or hesitation behind the back after which he can go straight for his shot or attack the rim. In the half court Dylin has a very nice step back dribble move where he can reset the offense or create his shot. In the mid-range Dylin can covert FGs with 1 or 2 dribble pull-ups or from transition. He can attack the rim off the dribble & finish with either hand from both sides. Dylin is very crafty near the rim where he can score in traffic. He know how to set up his defenders & then execute a successful move. He has learned how to draw double teams to set up his opponent & then deliver an excellent pass.
Dylin is a very tough ball hawking defensive specialist. He plays the entire 94 feet with intense defensive pressure the entire game. He has very good lateral movement, footwork & instincts to beat his opponent to their desired location. On both sides of the ball Dylin plays with great energy, consistency, efficiency & concentration. He can rebound in traffic, make deflections, & is good for 3 plus steals per game. Dylin understands all the intangibles & he delivers, getting the 50/50 balls, making the extra pass, setting screens, diving on the floor for loose balls & more.
We consider passion for basketball & the will to improve as intangibles. Dylin passes the complete intangible list with flying colors & works on his game 6-7 days a week. Dylin & his Trainer (Miles Meadows) work to improve all the basketball skills on both sides of the ball in addition to strength & conditioning. Dylin incorporates running during the week & before & after every workout he completes his flexibility program. We asked Dylin how he has improved since last season & he says, “My overall skills got better, I became stronger, improved finishing thru contact, gained more confidence & I developed into a vocal leader. I will always train to continually improve my total basketball skills & work out to get stronger, faster, quicker & more explosive for the duration of my entire basketball career.”
During his freshmen season Dylin played varsity at the Gerstell Academy located in Carroll County, MD. After the school year, Dylin’s parents decided to move close to Annapolis because the Borden family enjoys the Chesapeake Bay. Last season at Annapolis Area Christian School Dylin was a starter & averaged 8.5 points per game, 7 assists , 3.5 rebounds & 3 steals per game for the Eagles. For the remainder of his high school career we believe Dylin will continue to be a stat sheet stuffer & impact the game with plays that do not show up in the stat line. This spring & summer he played for Mid Atlantic Select 16U & performed very well in the UAA finals in Atlanta. He averaged averaged 8 points & 4 assist per game playing for MAS the entire grassroots season. Last year he averaged 16 points 8 assists, 5 rebounds & 3 steals per game in grassroots play. This summer Dylin was invited to the Invitee Only Bucknell, Hofstra, Cornell, Hampton University, Columbia University & University of Chicago Team Camps. He participated at the Invitee Only US Naval Academy, Lafayette, and Randoph Macon Team Camps & played well. This summer Dylin competed against & played with many D1 players, mostly mid majors & held his own & sometimes out played them. In our opinion college coaches should definitely take a look at Dylin who is winner on & off the court.
In the classroom Dylin is an excellent student maintaining a 3.5 GPA & he is very interested in History. He is very close to his mom & dad who attend all his games. In his downtime Dylin likes to study Chris Paul (CP3), Devin Booker (Suns) & Tyler Ulis (Suns) of the NBA. Dylin’s says he tries to emulate his favorite player CP3 (Chris Paul). Some of his Coaches call Dylin Mookie (Blaylock who played with Hawks) because of his tough on ball defense where he can strip defenders & get steals.
