Prospect Spotlight: Micah Johnson (2020)
After having a coming out party last month at our Top 250 Expo in Des Moines, Ankeny Centennial 6-foot-7 forward Micah Johnson has become of Iowa’s hottest young prospects.
He was sensational while showcasing his wide array of skills on both sides of the ball, and proved to be one of the state’s most versatile stretch-fours in the process.
“My game has definitely evolved from being a post-up center, and now being able to play out on the perimeter. Playing with All Iowa Attack this summer really helped me with that,” said Johnson.
“I need to develop my 3-point shot more, but I’ve really been working on pulling up and being able to score off the dribble, and being able to score at the rim. And defensively, I’m able to play against centers on the inside, or against guards.”
Johnson was one of the the key players for All Iowa Attack 15U this past spring and summer, and says he learned a lot while playing against some of the nation’s top comp.
“It was a great summer, I thought I did pretty good,” he said. “At first I was a little timid, playing against better and more athletic players from around the country. But after a while, I got it going, and being able to play with a top prospect like Braxton (Bayless) really helped.”
With his sophomore season quickly approaching, Johnson says he’s caught the attention of Centennial coach Bob Fontana, and the talented forward should have a big role with the varsity this winter.
“This summer I was playing with the varsity. Coach Fontana has been having me play the four and five position, but I’ll be playing some from the wing, too” said Johnson. “Whether or not I’m starting or not, I’ll be a good scoring option and being able to play defense against whoever I’m matched up against.”
As for his recruitment, he’s heard some from local schools. He can expect that to heat up considerably next summer.
“I’ve gotten some contact through email from some D2s and NAIA schools, not many,” he said. “But I think, pretty soon, that will improve and change.”
