Prospect Spotlight update 2019: Cameron Brown
Cameron Brown, 6’5’5″, CG, Eleanor Roosevelt Raiders HS. Greenbelt, MD.
Grassroots Team: District basketball Club 16U
Since the spring Cameron has shot up a good 2 inches, to over 6’5″ and his new height is very noticeable just adding more power to his D1 prospect level resume. We last saw Cameron at the DMV Elite 80 & we remain in close contact with him. He is an excellent D1 recruit with a great & diversified skill set. Cameron is very long & he is still growing into his body. We are convinced he can take his game to another level. Our excellent senior Recruit Analyst & Writer Adam Ayalew wrote an article on Cameron in May, but we would like to update him. We watched Cameron at the DeMatha BSN Summer League playing for Eleanor Roosevelt (ER or Rose ) & at the District Basketball Club this spring & summer. Cameron is a very hard worker & when we look towards the near future, we believe Cameron will be receiving more D1 offers. High Point University (D1) has offered Cameron and the are building a DMV pipeline. The Panthers signed District Basketball Club alumnus Jamal Wright in 2016 who averaged 8 ppg in his freshmen season, 6’10” Sam berlin for NOVA who averaged 8.0 ppg last season & Andre Fox from Eleanor Roosevelt HS who averaged 12.7 ppg in his sophomore year. High Point signed St. St. Stephens St. Agnes outstanding PG Denmark Slay (District Basketball Club) from 2017 & just this week added Cameron’s District Basketball Club 17u outstanding teammate, Curtis Holland from Southern HS who we rank @ #25 in the 2018 rankings. Cameron is ranked @ #15 in our updated 2019 rankings. We will break down Cameron’s skill-set in the next few paragraphs, but we would like to emphasize that Cameron can impact the game without scoring, is a great teammate, a winner, an excellent student to combine with excellent fundamentals & D1 skills.
Versatility & being able to play & guard multiple positions opens the eyes of College Recruiters. We know Cameron can play 1 thru 4 & defend 1 thru 4, and at ER & he has potential to play a stretch 5, but he is probably better off as a wing or at PG. Cameron possesses a very good handle with both hands & assortment of go to moves. He can beat full court pressure by freezing his opponent & then blowing by them. Cameron always plays with his head up with a great IQ & court vision. He can make all the passes from any position on the court with quickness & precision. Cameron can run the fast break & half court sets, or play off the ball at a very high level. He is a superb ball mover & an emerging vocal leader.
If the Raiders need a basket, Cameron can score in bunches & last year he hit 29 3s for ER in his sophomore season. His range is well beyond the college 3 point line with beautiful shot mechanics & the ability drain treys on or off the dribble. Cameron can score from all 3 levels & from the triple threat. He has a great jab step & can break down the defense after his jab with a straight go after his strong-side jab, jab left & go or jab then use a between legs then crossover, inside & then crossover, or a hesitation & go. His moves are quick & compact Cameron gets downhill very fast. His mid range game is lethal, & Cameron can score on 1 or 2 dribble pull ups just rising up & over defenders with his high release. He can score from curls & back screen from the 3 & mid range on a quick rise without a dribble.
Cameron utilizes his height & length on defense where he is a very good re bounder & solid defender. He has excellent timing & reactions for rebounding & blocking shots. Cameron can run down defenders in the full court & close out from anywhere on the court for a shot rejection. He can get into the passing for deflections & Cameron is good for a few steals per game. His athleticism is very solid with nice elevation on his shots, close out speed & lateral movement. We asked Cameron how his game has improved since this April & he says, “I am more confident with my overall consistency, more explosive & I have put in a lot of work with my shot where I have become more consistent. While I have improved on finishing thru contact I want to get better. Currently, I am working to improve my quickness, explosion, footwork, and ball handling.” Cameron works on his game 6 days a week with a great effort & when we chatted with him this summer at a DBC workout, it was his 3rd workout of the day. He has great passion for the game & as he reaches his current goals he raises the bar & sets new ones & adds, “My parents are my role models & I credit my work ethic from them & my sister. At ER I am working on explosiveness & quickness & on weekends improving my footwork & getting faster. We run 5 on 5s at various gyms & everyday I perform my basketball drills. I am developing a step back, a jump stop in the lane, & playing off 2 feet in the paint.” Thru the week Cameron lift weights & performs other S & C movements such as plyos, runs, & works on speed, agility & flexibility. Between school & basketball there is not much downtime, but Cameron never muses spending quality time with his family.Additionally, he likes study Jimmy Butler & Kawhi Leonard of the NBA.
On the court Cameron has excellent Coaches at ER in Head Coach Brendan O’Connell, & Assistants Coaches Bryan Hogg, Steve Segears & Brenden Straughn. Playing for The District Basketball Club Cameron receives superb Coaching from DBC Founders Devin Williams (USA Basketball & Gonzaga HS Asst. Coach) & Walter Booth now the Head Coach at St. Mary Ryken of the WCAC & the entire DBC Caching Staff.
Eleanor Roosevelt is a well known basketball powerhouse in DC/ DMV winning their last MD 4A state title in 2015/16. ER is always a threat to win the MD 4A Regionals & advance to the State semifinals at he University of Maryland. This year is no exception & the Raiders have a great core in Cameron, 6’4″ CG, Jaden Faulkner ranked @ #36 in our 2018 player rankings , 6’3″ WG Isaiah Gross who plays with Cameron for the DBC & is ranked @ # 22 in our 2019 player rankings & 6’3″ W Juston Bailey who just entered our top 100 2018 rankings.
In the classroom Cameron maintains a fantastic 3.3 GPA & he interested in majoring in Business in college & Business Entrepreneurship. As mentioned, Cameron is very close to his Mom, Dad & sister who are his role models. We see his wonderful parents at all Cameron’s games & at DBC practices. To date High Point is his only D1 offer, but we expect Holy Cross, Radford, Mt. St. Marys & Lafayette to offer in addition to other D1 programs in 2017. We will be following ER, Cameron & his teammates closely this coming season with live game reports & player articles. Stay tuned.
