Recruiting Report: Kendall McMillian (2018)
Mount Saint Joseph is coming off yet another historical season where they earned both MIAA and BCL crowns. Led by current Maryland freshman Darryl Morsell, the Gaels will look to protect their hardware this upcoming season. Fortunately, there will be a lot of familiar faces. One of those will be senior guard Kendall McMillian.
“We all knew each other, we all hung out together a lot,” McMillian said of his team last season. “We had a very tight knit group and special bond that most teams didn’t really have.”
Part of building a successful championship caliber program is preaching the players to buy in to what the winning formula is. For McMillian, a prized Division II prospect, it was coming off the bench in the sixth-man role. For most players with his skill set, it would mean being a starter and top scoring option. But McMillian understood his role and what he had to do in order for his team to reach their maximum potential.
“I came off the bench as a sixth-man and tried to provide a spark for the team,” McMillian told PrepHoops. “Score when I had to and also feed Darryl and Stix (Jalen Smith) and try to get everyone else involved in the offense.”
The 6’2 guard averaged a respectable eight points, six rebounds and three assists per game. McMillian has a great feel for the game and when to pick and choose his spots to score, but what’s most impressive about his game is his rebounding ability. For a guard, McMillian is one of the best rebounders in the MIAA. Last season he finished third on the team behind Morsell and Smith, so it speaks to his willingness and energy to produce in that area.
This past AAU season for Maryland 3D, McMillian wanted to put more of a focus on his scoring ability. With Morsell gone, there will be a big void to fill in that regard. Although the Gaels have a top guard prospect in 2019 in James Bishop and another guard prospect who is courting Division II interest in Tyree Myers, McMillian still is looking to display his own scoring ability to keep his team on top.
“I’m a really good slasher and have great vision,” McMillian said. “I really worked on my jumpshot and quickness. I feel like I got a whole lot better over the summer. I really wanted to show everyone how my game has matured.”
While he doesn’t hold any offers at the moment, McMillian is hearing from a number of Division II and Division III programs. That list includes: St. Thomas Aquinas, Wheeling Jesuit, New Haven, Seton Hill, Catawba, Millersville, Roanoke, Marymount, Penn State-Harrisburg, Randolph Macon and Hood.
McMillian told PrepHoops he still has many visits to take in October and doesn’t have a deadline as to when he will made his final decision.
