Prospect Spotlight: Chace Davis (2021)
After a productive summer on the grassroots circuit with Team Takeover, Chace Davis is ready to make his mark on the MAC. A rising freshman at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, the talented guard should factor into a key role from day one.
“The biggest thing I learned this summer is I need to work on my jump shot,” Davis said. “In AAU I used to go to the rack, dunk or finish with athleticism, but now I need to develop my jump shot and work.”
As a frosh, Davis believes his role will be to get my teammates involved, and score when he needs to. He’s not shy about his goals either. He says his personal goal is to make All-Met Team, and his team goal is to win the MAC Championship. Something his brother, Steffen Davis, did twice at Maret.
“My brother has had a big impact on me. He takes me to the gym, he helps me work out, he helps me with my school work. My brother is like a second dad to me. He texts me every day and reminds me to keep working,” Davis began. “My brother is a big part of how i’m playing right now, how I’m improving in basketball. I talk to him every day literally. He helps me push.”
Davis says he has picked up two specific things from his brother and added them to his game: how to talk at all times while on the floor, and how to get teammates involved.
“He’s very smart on and off the floor,” said Davis of his older brother. “I’m trying to be like him, trying to be better than him. My brother is mainly a shooter. I’m like a combo guard I can shoot, get to the basket, dunk. I’m more athletic.”
A student of the game, Davis is learning the importance of moving on to the next play. Right now he’s working on getting back on defense consistently after a missed shot. He knows he’s not a great three point shooter at this point, and he’s working to perfect his mid range pull up before expanding his range.
“I really like St. Andrew’s. It’s a welcoming community,” said Davis, who played JV as an eighth grader last season. “Coach (Kevin) Jones is always asking me about my grades, and how I’m doing.”
Davis has impressed this fall at open gyms. Mount St. Mary’s has offered, and a handful of other division one programs have expressed interest. As he continues to challenge himself and develop both on and off the court, Davis should only see his recruitment continue to grow.
