2018 Summer Offers Across Virginia (Part 3)
Now that we’ve predicted some of the top prospects in the state, it’s time to take a look at those who boosted their stocks in July and August and came away with new offers. Here’s part three of our “Summer Offers Across Virginia” series, featuring five guys who pulled new offers during the live period.
Timon Jones | 5’11” PG | Henrico/Team Richmond Garner Road
July/August Offers: Longwood
Expect to hear a lot about Jones this season at Henrico, as he’s their top returning scorer and one of the only returners they have with major varsity experience. Despite being sub 6’0”, Jones is a major scoring threat with the ball in his hands. He has a quick first step, can score it from all three levels and when he gets it going he’s tough to stop. He had a great showing in July, and topped it off with a big time performance at Longwood Elite Camp to earn his offer. They’re the first, but may not be the last school to overlook his diminutive size and pull the trigger on him.
Kobe Tigney | 6’4” WF | VA Academy/New World VA
July/August Offers: Navy, Fairmont State
Tigney’s stock is going up and he could be a late bloomer that pulls in a number of high academic low major schools. His first division one offer came from Navy, but a lot of Big South, CAA and Patriot League schools are mulling over the idea of him and he could see some offers with a good senior season at VA Academy. Slated as a “three and D” guy at the next level, Tigney’s long, athletic and can shoot it from deep, three things college coaches love in a wing.
Nate Spurlock | 6’7” PF | WT Woodson/District Basketball Club
July/August Offers: WV Wesleyan, Millersville
Spurlock added a couple of division two offers to his resume after picking up a division one offer from Central Connecticut State in the Spring. The skilled big man showed his talent in spurts for District Basketball Club, and it’s impossible to hide a guy with his size that can play inside-out and has a good feel for the game as well. He rebounds well, has a soft touch on the block and out to twenty feet and he’s tougher than many people think. His game doesn’t fit everyone’s style, but schools looking for a stretch four really need to consider taking a look at him.
Darius Hines | 5’10” PG | Bishop Ireton/Team Takeover Orange
July/August Offers: Lincoln College, LIU Post
In 2015 it was Devin Morgan or Matoaca, in 2016 it was Bash Townes of Norfolk Collegiate, last season it was Alden Parham of Monacan. There’s always one player who pulls in a ton of division two offers before getting that division one offer, and this year it looks like it may be Hines. The 5’10” lead guard was the floor general for a talented Team Takeover Orange team, and his ability to lead on both ends, make plays for others and knock down shots when needed garnered him four division two offers with more to come most likely. The question will be if a division one program decides to take a chance on him, and from the way he dictates the game with the ball in his hands it would be smart of them to do so.
Terrence Whitfield | 6’4” WF | Massanutten/River City Reign
July/August Offers: Catawba
Expect Whitfield to blow up as a defender and energy guy with his post graduate year at Massanutten. He looks the part, as he’s a solid 6’4” wing with a good frame and unreal athleticism in the open floor. He attacks the basket hard, is a lock down defender both on and off the basketball and he’s improved offensively to where he can make shots both off the catch and off the bounce. There aren’t many guys with his raw strength and athleticism, and as he continues to develop he should be a no brainer for low and midmajor programs up and down the east coast because you can teach offense, but you can’t teach the things he brings to the table.
