Prospect Watch: Evan Asleson (2019)
Class of 2019 guard Evan Asleson of DeSmet has one of the top perimeter shooting strokes in the St. Louis area.
The 6’1″ combo guard shot an impressive 44 percent from 3-point range during his sophomore season in 2017. That good marksmanship continued during the summer grassroots season with the Arsenal Hoops 16U squad.
“The keys to my success as a shooter come from being consistently in the gym,” he said. “My brother has taught me to have a short term memory when it comes to shooting and move on from misses because the next one is going in. If you want to be a successful shooter, you have to work on it.”
As a sophomore, Asleson averaged eight points a game for the Spartans, who were built around 6’7″ standout Ryan Stipanovich, who is now at freshman at Bradley. Asleson will now become more of a focal point on offense with Stipanovich having graduated. As he enters his third season on the varsity, he is ready to step into a leadership role as the Spartans will field one of the youngest teams in the St. Louis area.
“I for sure see myself being a leader this season,” he said. “Being on the varsity as a freshman, I have had some great upperclassmen leaders, and I am ready to become that. It will be tough, going on our third coach in three years, but I believe because of that it is even more important that I step up and lead these guys.”
Asleson has spent his past two summers playing for Arsenal Hoops. His play has helped Arsenal Hoops increase its profile to the point where they were invited to play in the Under Armour Association Finals in Atlanta in July. He has consistently been the team’s leading the scorer for the past two summers.
“Playing a tough summer schedule helped me a bunch,” he said. “Getting a chance to play in great events and even the UAA Finals was huge for me. Playing big, athletic guards only pushed me to expand my game.”
