Recruiting Report: Hunter Sand (2018)
Hunter Sand is one of the top three-sport athletes in North Dakota and just wrapped up a strong summer playing grassroots with ECI Prospects.
Sand, a 6-foot-2 guard from Dakota Prairie, averaged more than 20 points per game for his high school team and put his wide-ranging skillset on display throughout the summer helping fill in the gaps as his team dealt with various injuries and absences.
“It was a really fun summer,” Sand said. “We had to battle though a lot of injuries but it was a lot of fun. Getting a chance to play with some great guys. I had a lot of opportunity to showcase my game.”
Having an opportunity to play against the best players in the state and all over the midwest proved very beneficial to Sand as he’s gotten used to playing at a much quicker pace now and against players who can challenge his size, skill and athleticism.
“It Really teaches you have to play through a lot of contact and play a lot tougher,” said Sand. “That’s when the game slows down for you. When you get used to play at a faster pace, you have to make quicker decisions. I think I stepped up my on-ball defense this summer. That was a big focus for me trying to improve in that area was important.”
Sand has the potential to play football, basketball or baseball in college and said he’s talking to a handful of local schools regarding basketball but hasn’t yet made a decision on his future plans.
For now, his focus is on his senior year and he’s particularly excited about the upcoming winter season.
“I’m extremely excited for basketball,” Sand said. “We only graduated two seniors and we have a lot of guys coming back.”
