Mr. Basketball Candidate: DJ Steward
In this series we take a look at the potential candidates for Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois for this upcoming season. Here we profile Fenwick 2020 point guard DJ Steward.
Profile:
Steward made quite an impression during his freshman year at Fenwick. He went from hyped 8th grader to almost putting his team on his back to win a state championship. The smooth and wiry point guard has an excellent feel for the game. Makes others around him better as a distributor and can put up points in a hurry with his speed and mid-range shooting. High-major prospect and one of top young players in state.
Odds to Win:
15/1
Why He Can Win:
Steward will be the man this year! Last season he shared the spotlight with seniors Jacob Keller and Jamal Nixon. This year (and for the next three years) it will be his show to run and Fenwick will go as far as he takes them. He will have a solid supporting cast of shooters and role players that compliment his strengths. Steward might be the top player in the Catholic League as a sophomore.
Obstacles to Win:
He is only a sophomore! We could probably stop there. It is improbable for a junior to win this award and almost impossible as a sophomore. There will be a lot of pressure this year for Steward for the first time in his high school career. Last year anything he did was a bonus. This year he is expected to carry the team with the loss of Keller and Nixon.
