Recruiting Report: Tyler Foster (2018)
Mt. Zion Prep School has been a place where highly recruited players especially around the Baltimore area go to not only help their stock on the court, but also off the floor. This season, they’re primed to have a solid season behind a talented roster. One of their big pieces this season will be guard Tyler Foster.
Foster, a former Georgetown commit, is looking to build his stock once again by leading the Warriors to a successful season. Throughout his high school career, Foster played for Gilman, South Kent Prep and Middleburg Academy (VA). He’ll do one prep year at Mt. Zion before departing for college.
Even though Foster will only have one season at Mt. Zion, he’ll be a go-to option offensively throughout. The 6’5 guard can score at all three levels and has a quick first step off the catch. He can break down his defender with shifty moves and does a good job reading the defense once he gets an edge.
The past couple of years have been a learning experience for Foster. Playing for multiple coaches at multiple schools makes a player have to adjust to each coach’s playing style and the caliber of teammates he was equipped with.
“I learned a lot,” said Foster referring to his last two years of prep schools. “I learned how to push myself more. I learned how to play with good players. I learned how to take care of my body and mature overall as a player. My senior year at Middleburg I really worked on my leadership skills and my all around game. At Mt. Zion, I’m here trying to put it all together from the beginning.”
Middleburg finished with a 12-16 overall record last season, but Foster put up great individual numbers by posting 20.3 points per game while pulling down 4.1 rebounds. This upcoming season, not only is winning games Foster’s focus, but about silencing the critics.
“The goal this year is to win games and prove people wrong that have different opinions about me,” Foster told PrepHoops. “Everyone says different things about me. They’ll say I’m too laid back or my temper is an issue. All I’m trying to do is show my personality. It’s all about winning for me, so I show a lot of passion for the game and a lot of passions for my teammates. I’m always pushing my teammates but it’s always for the best so I’m hoping people can realize that.”
Foster can score with the best of them. Because of his athleticism and effort, he makes for a solid defensive option as well, but there are still improvements that he will focus on this season.
“I’m going to work on ball handling,” Foster said. “At the next level for me at my size, I think it would be good for me to be a combo guard.”
Since reclassifying to 2018, Foster has left it up to his coaches at Mt. Zion to handle most of his communication with schools. He told PrepHoops that while he hasn’t talked to any himself, his coaches have said schools have been calling.
What will a college program get with Foster?
“They’re going to get a person who’s going to play hard and have passion,” Foster said. “They’re going to get a player who can get buckets and make his teammates better.”
