Predicting the DMV’s Top Playmakers (Part 2)
In anticipation of the upcoming high school season, we will be taking a closer look at various teams and players throughout the DC Metro Area. In this edition we run down five lead guards who could find themselves among the most productive playmakers in the DMV region.
EVAN BUCKLEY | STONE BRIDGE ’19
During a highly productive sophomore season, Evan Buckley firmly established himself as not just one of the top playmakers in Virginia, but the entire DMV. The reliable floor general, who averaged over five assists per game last season, displays fantastic intangibles and toughness. Look for Buckley to record 10 or more assists on a number of occasions as he should improve significantly upon last year’s solid numbers.
STEPHEN CANNADY | PALLOTTI ’18
Even though we tabbed Steve Cannady as a dark horse scoring threat, there’s no denying his feel for the game and playmaking ability. The rising senior is highly unselfish, and more often than not makes the right decision with the ball. Look for Cannady to pull all the strings for Pallotti Head Coach Dennis Murphy.
JASON GIBSON | SIDWELL ’18
We’ve yet to see Jason Gibson as the primary playmaker for Sidwell Head Coach Eric Singletary in an extended role, but that will change as he is expected to start at the point this season. The supremely confident rising junior is talented offensively, and has been labeled as a “big time player” by his former teammate — Penn commit Jelani Williams. Look for Gibson to consistently create easy looks for his teammates, and record his personal best in assists this season.
XAVIER JOHNSON | EPISCOPAL ’19
Since his freshman year, Xavier Johnson has started at the point, and been very trustworthy. The rising junior, who carries an astonishingly good assist/to ratio, will be asked to protect the ball and facilitate the offense for Jim Fitzpatrick. Johnson has valuable experience as a state champion, and should pick up his production significantly this season.
LINCOLN YEUTTER | BULLIS ’18
It’s been a while since we’ve had the chance to see Lincoln Yeutter play, but there’s no question he is a great leader and team player. Look for the rising senior, who missed most of the summer due to injury, to bounce back strong and possibly lead his team in assists this year.
