It is important that each player understand his or her role within the team. When players start to do things that are out of character or not within their role, things can get sketchy. But when I interviewed Kameron Gibson of Walnut Hills, it was clear that he understood his role clearly. “This summer really helped me from a leadership standpoint,” Gibson stated during our interview this week. “We will have a young team next season so I will be the man. I feel this summer really helped me prepare for that role.” And luckily for Coach Ricardo Hill and the Eagles, Kameron has the game to match.
When getting the chance to watch Kam there are a few characteristics that jump at you. First and foremost is his very calm demeanor. Never does he show emotion even when it is crunch time. Second is his size and length. Standing 6’3 with long arms, Gibson also has the ball-handling ability to go with that length which allows him to play both guard positions. But the main that gets noticed is the fact that this young man can knock down shots, in particular from the mid-range area. “I feel that the biggest improvement in my game has been in my mid-range game,” Kam stated. “That was a big focus of mine over the summer, becoming more efficient.” The Walnut senior also felt that he improved on the defensive end over the summer as well. “Playing against quicker guards and the top players helped me improve on the defensive end as well.”
So far Kam has no offers but is receiving interest from Dayton, UNC Asheville, Miami (OH), Army and Ashland among other schools. But while Kam is looking forward to that first offer, he also looking forward to the upcoming season which will be his last at the Nut House. When asked the keys to success for Walnut Hills season, the theme in Gibson answer revolves around defense and togetherness. “Everyone must know what their role and job is on the team. Also, defense will be a major key, we must lock down on defense.” If the rest of team takes this advice with Kam leading the charge, the Eagles will be a dangerous team this season.
