Francisco’s Take: Wayne Arnold to CS Fullerton
Scouts Take: Wayne Arnold to CS Fullerton
About a year ago Cal State Fullerton acquired a commitment from an under-the-radar prospect—that being Matt Mitchell out of Eastvale Roosevelt High School. However, Mitchell during his senior campaign took his game to new heights and felt that Fullerton was no longer a good fit for him.
This summer Fullerton pursued another prospect that possesses similar scoring talents of Mitchell—that being Wayne Arnold.
Arnold, who played for Gamepoint Pump N Run this summer as well as his high school Dominguez, put up big numbers due to his scoring mentality and polished jump shot. These were the skills that attracted schools like USC, Santa Clara, and Tulane, but at the end, the Titans snatched the verbal commitment of Arnold.
Arnold should excel in the Big West due to his athleticism and shooting abilityWhen evaluating Arnold, the first skill that jumps out immediately is his shooting prowess. The has a feathery jump shot with range that extends out to 22-feet. He has a quick release and he doesn’t need a lot of space. In the open court he is an explosive slasher who doesn’t need an elevator to get to the second floor.
“His shooting ability and athleticism are two traits that make him an attractive recruit’ ,according to one college assistant. “He’ll need to get significantly stronger, but a college weight program will benefit him greatly.”
In terms of improvement, the wiry Arnold will need to live in a weight room to add strength to willowy frame. He needs to improve his ability to to finish through contact as well as his ball handling skills versus tight pressure. In addition, consistency can be an issue as there are times he disappears in games if the ball is not in his hands.
All prospects have a a number of things to hone while they’re in college, and Arnold is no exception, but his upside trumps everything. At Fullerton he will excel in their transition-oriented style where he can take advantage of his bouncy nature and shooting prowess.
