Recruiting Report: Carson Rentz (2018)
Carson Rentz was one of the more dangerous shooters in the Midwest this spring and summer. Now Carson wants to bring that tough to his senior year.
Football comes first though when it comes the senior year. Carson doesn’t just fire strikes on the court, he’s also got an arm that leads the Dell Rapids football team. The leadership with BBA helped not just in basketball but also for football.
“This coming fall I’ll be playing football and be the quarterback this year and I’m really looking forward to that,” Carson said. “I grew most as a leader I would say. I had a really good summer with BBA and I just learned how to control the game more and just score the ball more.”
The BBA Force was about a .500 level team this winter and they played in some tough events. AIA Gym Rats events, the KC Hardwood Classic, Prep Hoops Finale, and others. All of it made Rentz and his teammates better.
“The experiences I’ll take away from my final AAU season are indescribable, I had an incredible team to play with this summer and made a lot of new friendships, I had one of the best coaches who trusted in me to make the right decisions and I will always be grateful for the opportunity I was given this last summer.
“Playing this spring and summer challenged me to work harder,” Carson continued. “The level of play in AAU is more physical and more mental than in the winter season and I have learned that in order to play at the next level you have become stronger faster and be smarter.
“It’s tougher to play in because it’s all the best player playing against each other and it’s a great experience overall.”
Rentz shot the ball well but he also grabbed a better understanding of how to make others better around him within the offensive structure. That should lead to a stronger Dell Rapids team.
“The part of my game I’m hoping to improve most is getting other guys involved,” Rentz said. “I have a great group of guys at home who I can’t wait to play with and just getting them involved will help us go a long way this year.”
Guys like Jeffrey Schuch and Mason Schmidt are scoring weapons that Rentz should work perfectly with heading into the year.
The off-season of play will have colleges watching Dell Rapids regularly this year. To see all of the Dell Rapids players including Carson who is hearing from three programs at the moment regularly.
“I do plan on playing college basketball a year from now. I really want to stay close to home though. I don’t have any offers yet but Mount Marty, Presentation, and Dakota State said they would offer soon and I’ve been keeping in touch with Jamestown as well.”
This will be Carson’s third year as a varsity regular plus he played some as a freshman as well. Rentz averaged nearly three assists a game last year, hit 40 percent of his triples as a sophomore, and has played with guys like Schuch, Schmidt, Sheldon Siemonsma, Mason Peter, and of course Ty Hoglund.
So Rentz has played with and behind talent in the past. Now he’s a main guy. So what are the goals for the year? Of course Carson wants to go out on top.
“My goal for the next 12 months is winning a state title both in football and basketball and becoming the best basketball player I can be,” Rentz said. “In the offseason and playing college basketball. Along with leading my team in football this year.”
