Recruiting Update: Aug. 9, 2017
There has been a lot of movement here lately in the state of Florida for high school hoops.
Transfers for current athletes and offers following the last live period of the summer have come in at a high clip.
Here’s a look at some of the updates you need to know about.
Nassir Little lands huge offers from UNC and Duke
The 2018 Orlando Christian Prep forward ranks No. 7 in our rising senior class rankings. Duke offered him on Tuesday while North Carolina offered him last Monday. He’s also picked up offers from Ohio State, Arizona State and Oregon in the month of July. Little is a major factor at OCP and he should find his way into a high Division I program next season. He announced that his top five list will be out shortly.
Vernon Carey Jr. is heating up at the right time
2019 University forward Vernon Carey Jr. has been a major player for a while and it shows as our No. 1 2019 ranked athlete. After yet another big summer with Nike Team Florida, he came away with offers from Duke, North Carolina and Kansas all since Sunday. Carey Jr. is a mature post player at his 6’10” frame. He is a true high Division I prospect and with two years left in high school, his stock will only get bigger.
Serrel Smith is finally earning a slew of offers
The rising senior at St. Pete had a nice amount of offers prior to the start of this month. However, Serrel Smith has really come on strong lately with offers from Dayton, Temple, Memphis, Texas A&M Corpus Christi. He had seven other offers in July that included VCU and Murray State. Smith is a pure scorer who will be monitored by several mid-Division I programs this fall.
Jose Placer added four more offers last month
2018 Master’s Academy guard Jose Placer is a smooth operator at the point. He had two offers coming into this summer from UNF and New Hampshire. He added four more from American, Mercer, UMBC and Presbyterian. Placer is a very sound basketball player, but his lack overall body strength is keeping him at the low-Division I level. He should be able to raise his stock some more as a senior.
Luke Anderson is drawing attention
2019 Lakeland forward Luke Anderson earned an offer from FGCU back in June. USF came calling in late July and then on Tuesday, Iowa State offered. Today, the big man who wrapped up his summer with Team Knight, heard from Kansas State as they offered. Anderson is a lengthy offensive weapon, who can drill outside shots and make you pay inside. He should have a big junior campaign.
Montverde’s Hampton earns some nice offers
2020 Montverde guard RJ Hampton arrived in Florida a few months ago. After a big travel season, he has earned offers from UCLA, Cal and LSU. The speedy and reliable point man is in for a monster season alongside R.J. Barrett and company at Montverde.
Pierce compiles two more offers
2018 Gibbs guard David Pierce is looking healthier than ever, playing with out his knee brace recently as a week ago. The rising senior earned offers from Coastal Carolina and UNC Asheville last week. He is a smart player who can make jumpers with ease and someone who makes everyone around him better. With health back on his side, Pierce will flourish in his last high school year.
