Nike Elite 100: 2019 PG Scouting
PrepHoops was in attendance this past week at the prestigious Nike Elite 100 Camp. We have extensive scouting reports on all of the prospects at the event. Next up is our evaluations of the 2019 point guards at the camp.
PG Cole Anthony (Arch Bishop Molly HS, NY)
Anthony was the best point guard in the camp and one of the premier players at Nike Elite 100. The 6’1” point guard is extremely explosive with the rock in his hands. So quick off the bounce with an monster first step and acceleration going to the basket through traffic. Had some huge takes to the hoop including a big left handed jam followed by the game winning score when his team was down to send them to the camp championship game. Cat quick taking great angles and has slick handles to get wherever he wants on the floor. Anthony’s shot has improved over the last year. Concise and quick release shooting it with confidence. As a passer he has great vision especially in the half court finding open teammates and cutters. Best point guard we have seen nationally in 2019.
PG Avery Anderson (Northwestern HS, TX)
Anderson is a very long and wiry point guard. He is only 6’0” currently, but projects to grow a couple more inches. The rangy guard won off the dribble consistently throughout the week.
PG Joe Girard (Glen Falls HS, NY)
Girard is a strong 6’0” point guard that has a bulky upper body. Tough kid that is a crisp passer. Makes good reads in the half court. Not an overly explosive athlete he actually rebounds at a high rate for a lead guard. Streaky perimeter shooter that has great form, but they were inconsistent going in.
PG Scotty Pippen (Pine Crest HS, FL)
The son of Chicago Bulls legend Scottie Pippen showed flashes. He is a thin 6’0” point guard that plays with a good motor. Pushes it in the open floor looking for his bigs running the court. As a scorer he is best shooting it from three. Didn’t show much else scoring wise.
PG Kira Lewis (Hazel Green HS, AL)
This 6’1” lead guard from Alabama is an athletic point that is excellent working in the mid-range. Drilled pull up 15-18 foot jumpers throughout the entire week. Quick off the dribble and got to the rack on a semi consistent basis where he has some hops. They were really shown at the end of one game where he got a steal and went the other way for a dunk!
PG Chris Harris (South Garland HS, TX)
Harris stands at 6’1” and he plays with a great motor. He can really shoot it! Hit deep threes throughout the entire event. Showed deep range from three both pulling up and off the catch. Mixed in a couple athletic finishes around the cup, but his three was where this scoring point guard shines.
PG Mario McKinney (Vashon HS, MO)
McKinney was the hometown kid out of St. Louis. The 5’11” lefty point guard is known as a scorer. He can really do that. Quick and shifty with the ball in his hands taking great angles. Gets in the lane where he has a knack for making some tough Kyrie type layups through bigs. Also showed well shooting it from three and mid-range. Great form on his shot. The biggest question in his game is whether or not he can make the transition to being a point guard and not a scoring undersized two. He displayed some progress especially later in the camp. Got defenders to collapse on him and kicked to open shooters. Also found several bigs for dump off dunks. McKinney proved he is high major with his play.
PG Bryce Cook (South Grand Prairie HS, TX)
Cook is a tiny 5’6” compactly built point guard that has a thick upper body. Uses ball screens well and is crafty in the lane. Pushes in the open floor and plays really hard. Mid-range he likes to utilize a floater.
PG Mark Watts (Old Redford Academy, MI)
Watts is a 6’1” point guard out of Michigan. His nickname “Rocket” makes sense with his speed in transition. The rangy point guard has blow by ability off the bounce and finishes well at the rim.
PG Isaiah Thompson (Zionsville HS, IN)
Thompson is a 5’11” pass first point guard that plays with a high basketball IQ. Quality distributor that has great vision in the half court making sound reads getting others involved. Works well around ball screens. Mixes in a three on occasion.
PG Al-Amir Dawes (St. Patrick’s School, NJ)
Dawes is from the Northeast and this 6’0” combo guard plays with a lot of energy. Outstanding layup maker. Made multiple incredibly tough ones throughout the camp over big men putting spin on it. Shoots it best from mid-range, but can stretch it out to three on occasion.
PG Justin Webster (Prestonwood Christian Academy, TX)
Webster came on strong the last two days of camp. At 6’1” Webster is a competitive leader that plays with a lot of passion for the game. Quick off the bounce and gets to the rim at a nice clip. Weaves in and out of traffic in transition. Solid shooter that can hit a three on occasion.
