Preseason All-Conference: WaMaC East
Player of the Year: 2019 Derek Krogmann, West Delaware
The league’s leading returning scorer and rebounder, Krogmann was the only player in the WaMaC to average a double-double last season, earning All-State honors. With John Nagel gone, his numbers should only increase.
First Team
2019 Derek Krogmann, West Delaware (15.8 points, 11.4 rebounds, 57.6 FG%)
The junior big man had a sensational sophomore season as the best player for the final remaining undefeated team in 3A. A 6-7 post with a seven-foot wingspan, he has the size and length to cause major issues on both ends of the floor, and the skill set to match. Look for him to have another All-State season for the Hawks.
2018 Tyler Kelley, West Delaware (11.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.4 steals, 1.0 blocks)
A long, athletic wing, Kelley is among the better shooters in the conference, and he has the all-around skill set to make a major impact on both ends of the floor. With lots of scoring graduated, his scoring numbers will need to spike up, and that’s something we should see happen after a strong summer with the Iowa Mavericks.
2018 Mitch Gehling, Dyersville Beckman (12.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 51.5 FG%)
The other top-notch big man in this division, Gehling runs the floor really well and uses that athleticism to beat his opponent down the floor routinely for easy buckets. An efficient scorer who can also step out and hit an occasional 3, he’ll be tasked with a larger scoring load this season after the Blazers graduated a pair of double-figure scorers.
2020 Calvin Harris, Western Dubuque (13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.9 assists)
Coming off a strong freshman season in which he finished among the top 10 in the division in scoring and top 15 in rebounding, Harris will be looking to send the Bobcats out of the WaMaC with a bang. A well-built guard who can get to the rim or knock down 3s, he should have a big sophomore season.
2018 Ben Krutzfeldt, Solon (9.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.6 steals, 40.6 3P%)
An all-around stat sheet stuffer, Krutzfeldt finished second in the division in assists last season and is a safe bet to lead in that category this year. The dynamic point guard is also capable of filling it up, as he’s the third best returning 3-point shooter. He’ll lead a Spartans team that is capable of taking the division crown.
