Preseason All-Conference: Pride of Iowa
Player of the Year: 2018 Brady Gavin, Martensdale-St. Mary’s
The 6-7 post is one of the state’s best multi-sport athletes, shining on the diamond as well for one of the best baseball programs in the state. On the hardwood, he’s a dominant low-post scorer who shot an astounding 72.8% from the floor, posted ridiculous double-double averages and was just an all-around stud for the Blue Devils. There’s no reason to expect his production to drop off, as his size and athletic ability is something the teams in this league don’t have an answer for.
First Team
2018 Brady Gavin, Martensdale-St. Mary’s (22.6 points, 13.2 rebounds, 72.8 FG%, 1.8 blocks)
We covered it in the Player of the Year section, but a player with the size and athletic ability of Gavin is expected to put up big numbers in a league like the Pride of Iowa, and he definitely doesn’t disappoint in that regard. A remarkably efficient post scorer who runs the floor and protects the rim, it’s not out of the question to see him putting up a 25-15 stat line this year.
2020 Brennan Sefrit, Bedford (19.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 60 3PM)
The 5-9 lead guard was one of the state’s most productive freshman a year ago, and he’ll look to build on that strong debut campaign with a strong sophomore season. A scorer who is equally adept at getting to the rim or knocking down 3s, he’s one of the league’s most talented players and should put up some huge numbers for the Bulldogs over the next three years.
2019 Spencer Lamb, Nodaway Valley (18.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 119 FTM)
The younger brother of one of the league’s best ever players (Jackson Lamb), Spencer had a strong sophomore season, ranking among the conference’s leaders in scoring and rebounding. An aggressive scoring guard, he led the POI in both free throws made and attempted, a testament to his relentless, attacking style of play.
2018 Carter Boothe, Central Decatur (17.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 2.6 steals)
The lead guard for what may be the league’s best team, Boothe finished ninth in the state in assists last year, and with four of the team’s top five back, don’t expect those numbers to drop off. He led the Cardinals in every major category expect for blocks last season and is the focal point of an attack that will be among the conference’s most potent.
2018 Chance Cobb, Southwest Valley (13.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals)
One of the league’s leading returning scorers, Cobb has the ability to score inside and out, and led the Timberwolves in assists to boot. With the next two scorers from last year’s roster gone, look for Cobb’s numbers to skyrocket.
