Recruiting Report: Tyler Cochran (2019)
Bolingbrook 2019 point guard Tyler Cochran plays on both the 16U and 17U squads for Hoopers Basketball Club on the grassroots circuit. He is effective on both. Shot the ball the best we have ever seen him consistently do it during the first live period. He drilled catch and shoot threes for days! Also hit a few pulling up. Smooth mechanics and when he is rhythm is a major weapon with his three ball. When scoring off the bounce is best on straight line drives to the hoop. Pushes it in transition with the ball in his hands and can score filling the lane as well. More of a combo than a refined point at this stage. Does flash drive and kick ability. Defensively really gets after it and competes on that end of the floor. Elevated his stock a lot in our eyes this past weekend. Should be monitored by low-major/D2 programs.
He enjoys playing up with and against guys a year older than him.
“With the 17U team we are doing pretty good. I like playing with these guys because I developed my game last year playing with Nana (Akenten) and playing with Zion (Griffin) is a blessing. He gets buckets and once he gets going everyone else gets going. Everybody can start hitting shots.”
Playing against a tougher and older level of competition during the spring/summer prepares him for high school season.
“It helps me a lot. I know what to do. I know I can handle the ball and do a lot for my team both on the offensive and defensive side. I feel that brings a lot back to my high school team.”
What is his role for the Hoopers 17 squad this year?
“Spark plug. Help my team out as much as I can. Try not to do too much. Just play my game.”
Cochran played a key role in helping Bolingbrook reach the final four at state.
“Playing with Nana Akenten and Malik Binns helped my game a lot. Now they are gone and I have to step up big. I have to be able take charge when I am on the court and be a better leader.”
He discussed the biggest assets in his game that will project toward the college level.
“I can rebound, play defense, and I can knock down open shots when I feel confident.”
Some of colleges showing interest include Western Michigan, Drake, Miami (OH), Eastern Illinois, Iowa, Northern Iowa, and UAB. Look for him to make a big jump in next rankings update after the spring.
