2017 Eastern Iowa All-Star Game
Northern Iowa and Iowa fans will have a chance to see some of their future Panthers and Hawkeyes take the floor one last time in their high school uniforms on Wednesday, March 22, during the 2017 Eastern Iowa All-Star game. The event will take place at Kirkwood Community College’s Johnson Hall in Cedar Rapids.
The evening starts at 6:00 p.m. with the girls game, with the boys to follow. The boys’ game features 13 players who were selected to the Iowa Newspaper Association’s All-State teams, including Austin Phyfe of Waverly-Shell Rock and Connor McCaffery of Iowa City West. Phyfe will play his college ball at Northern Iowa, while McCaffery will play for his dad at Iowa. The boys’ game will also feature 2017’s Mr. Basketball, Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Joe Smoldt, who is headed to Upper Iowa; Iowa City West’s Devontae Lane, a coveted prospect in both basketball and football; Maquoketa’s Abe Kinrade, who will head out to the Air Force Academy; and Mount Vernon’s Austin Ash, who will be a walk-on at Iowa, among many other talented players from the area.
With many high fliers in the lineup, there is sure to be quite the show put on during the All-Star contest. If you like to see dunks, get there to check out Davenport Central’s Ray Miller, arguably the state’s most explosive athlete.
There will also be a three-point contest for both the girls and boys, with the winners then facing off against each other. Participating for the boys will be Joe Smoldt, Tristen Kautman, Austin Ash and Dakota Soenksen.
