Continue ReadingThe Class 6A West Area bracket has four spots on the line for the state tournament. Below we breakdown the best game, predictions of each game and the four teams that will make the state tournament out of the bracket on the west side.
Best Game: Westmoore vs Putnam City North
Both of these teams appear to be on track to make the state tournament. With a win one team will punch their ticket to the state tournament. Westmoore features Will Graham, Trey Palmer and Damoriea Vick leading the way. Putnam City North has one of the best young guard duo’s in the state in Adokiye Iyaye and Micah Thomas. This one will come down to who anchors down on defense.
Three players to watch
Adokiye Iyaye 2018 Putnam City North Combo Guard
Iyaye is a rising prospect that is receiving mid major plus looks as a 1 or 2. This year Iyaye has really elevated his game to another level. He is a good two way player that makes it a focus to impact the game in as many ways as he possibly can.
Marques Wilson 2017 Edmond North Combo Guard (Signed LeHigh)
Wilson signed with LeHigh before the season, which has allowed him to have no pressure and just play his role at Edmond North. He has been a great facilitator to add with his ability to shoot the ball. Wilson will be keyed on at Edmond North for their playoff run.
Marvin Johnson 2017 Edmond North Wing
Johnson is the best under the radar player in the 2017 Oklahoma class that no one has heard of. He will sign with a JUCO due to academics, but will have a chance after two years to be a Division I talent with his skill set. At 6’5 with his athleticism, Johnson is a special talent that excels at getting to the rim.
Predictions
Games at Deer Creek
Edmond North vs Edmond Santa Fe
Edlam with a spot for the state tournament on the line. Edmond North is easily the more talented team in this game. With that said Edmond Santa Fe has some young players that have flown under the radar. Tauriawn Knight and Ben Smith are two players to keep an eye on at Edmond Santa Fe. This one goes to Edmond North and don’t expect it to be close. After a late loss in the regular season to Norman North, Edmond North has returned focused and ready to make a deep run.
Consolation: Putnam City West vs Mustang
Mustang is a surprising team after the level of players they lost from a year ago. Quantrell Jackson is a 2017 Wing leading the way at Mustang. Don’t be surprised if they make a run and some how win this game. With all that said, Putnam City West is my pick behind their experienced players from last years state tournament run to the Gold Ball.
Consolation Championship: Edmond Santa Fe vs Putnam City West
Edmond Santa Fe is just a year away I think from making the state tournament. Putnam City West wins this game behind the talent and experience of Gerren Jackson, Nick Robinson and Chris Potts.
Games at Mustang
Westmoore vs Putnam City North
We broke down this game a little earlier in the article. This one will be a fun one to watch. Can Adokiye Iyaye step up and dominate in the playoffs? We will get our answer on Friday. Putnam City North needs Iyaye to be the leader of the squad not necessarily just in points, but all the things he does well. Iyaye is a player that does a lot of the little things well. If Iyaye plays his game Westmoore will have trouble with him. Westmoore’s key player to watch will be Will Graham at the Point Guard spot. He will have to limit turnovers and do his best to get his teammates involved, but at the same time be a scoring force. Putnam City North finds a way to win a close one late.
Consolation Championship: Choctaw vs Edmond Memorial
Choctaw is the cinderella story in class 6A with their win in the opening round over host school Lawton. Edmond Memorial is very young and has taken some lumps this season on the scoreboard. Choctaw is playing their best basketball of the season. Edmond Memorial will find a way to get a victory in this one.
Consolation Championship: Edmond Memorial vs Westmoore
Never say never. Especially with Edmond Memorial, but Westmoore should win this one will ease. Look for the Jags to make their first state tournament in quite some time.
