Over the next week or so, we will be doing a “Best Available” series, giving coaches an idea of what kids are available and what kind of style they play in.
We continue as we look at part one of some of the best shooting wings that are still available. Stay tuned for more best available pieces moving forward. (Note: This list is in no particular order and in no way represents any rankings of any kind.)
Taqwain Drummond | 6’4” | Woodside
Drummond can be streaky at times, but he has a great frame and a killer mentality on the wing. He’s big enough to get his shot off over smaller defenders, and once he gets it going from deep he’s bound to knock down a few in a row. His size allows him to attack closeouts and finish at the basket, and he has deep and effortless range off the catch or off the bounce.
Tadas Nausedas | 6’5” | Virginia Academy
Nausedas can flat out shoot the basketball, and his ability to read screens and get his shot off quickly means that when he’s in the game defenses have to take notice. He stretches the floor for attacking guards, has beautiful form on his release and he’s a quiet assassin from deep. He alsso has good size, and while he’s somewhat one dimensional you still have to put someone with decent size on him or he’ll just shoot over smaller guards all day.
Nick Ball | 6’1” | Loudoun Valley
Ball has been one of the most under the radar shooters in the state the past two seasons, and is a big reason that Loudoun Valley has lost less than five games in that time. He has a killer mentality and is always looking for his shot, and he has a swagger and confidence about him you can’t teach. He’s a consistent threat from deep, can shoot it in transition and always seems to step up in big time games.
James Sullivan | 6’2” | Spotswood
Sullivan has quietly been one of the better players in the western part of the state for the past three seasons. He can play multiple roles, whether he needs to be the go-to guy or a “three and d” kind of guy. He shoots it well off the catch, has a solid midrange game and he can finish at the rim in transition. His ability to knock down shots to stretch the defense and defend the other team’s best player is his biggest attribute.
Jamie Pasha | 6’4” | Bishop Ireton
With great size and a high IQ, Pasha has been one of the most underrated wings in the WCAC over his career. He has a smooth stroke from deep, and with his size it allows him to shoot it over smaller defenders in the midrange as well. He shoots around 40% from deep, and with his size he’s also a good finisher at the rim when he attacks close outs.
