Most of you won’t remember but before there was this 40 player MBCA all star game that mixes and matches players into a random games, there was the Metro vs Outstate all star game that packed gyms and had the players competing for something. What’s that? The right to represent the metro, or the outstate, and the right to win for the metro, or the outstate.
So what would that game look like today?
I like the venues. St. Cloud State is perfect for the Friday game. The metro game used to be at the Target Center from when I remember. It then moved to Concordia-St. Paul. Before it was at the Target Center I’m not sure where it was.
They can put the Metro/Outstate game wherever in the metro, although Williams Arena would seem like the perfect fit (unfortunately the University charges some wild prices for gym using their space).
Who would play? Ten from the metro, ten from the outstate. How do you separate considering that the metro keeps expanding? I would simply do it by the leagues they play in as a I think more are quite clear in what is metro and what isn’t. The only exception is the Wright County as I believe the two sides of the league should be split with one as metro and one as outstate.
Metro. Let’s not complicate the matter, let’s just take the nine metro Mr. Basketball names and add Myles Hanson who I felt was the most deserving of those that didn’t make the final two.
That’s Brad Davison and McKinley Wright playing PG, Jordan Horn (or put Jordan at PG and let Brad play the two running with McKinley), Tywhon Pickford, Isaac Johnson, and Myles Hanson at wing, Goanar Mar and Nathan Reuvers as forwards, and Jericho Sims and Theo John at center. Hell of a team.
Outstate. Let’s start up front where we need size. Jesse Bergh of Lake Park-Audubon and Kade Hart of Faribault playing center. At forward we go with Weston Baker Magrath from Marshall along with Derek Thompson from Rocori.
At the wing spots Trae Berhow of Watertown-Mayer leads along with Chase Grinde of Spring Grove, Broc Finstuen of Pine Island, and Rob McClain of Red Lake, and at point guard is Bryce Irsfeld of Browerville and Dillon Haider of Melrose. I could throw a lot more names in there but I mixed talent with guys who have had great careers and led their teams to big success.
Who wins? That’s not the point. Watching the best play with each other is what are we looking for. And the outstate would want that game so bad they would compete at a high level.
Remember when we had Clash of the Classes giving fans the rare chance to see Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn, Reid Travis, and JP Macura play together? That’s the thought here as well. McKinley and Brad in the backcourt? Theo and Jericho together up front? So fun!
