Over the next week or so, we will be doing a “Best Available” series, giving coaches an idea of what kids are available and what kind of style they play in.
We continue as we look at six scoring point guards that are still available. Stay tuned for more best available pieces moving forward. (Note: This list is in no particular order and in no way represents any rankings of any kind.)
Dom Fragala | 5’11” | John Champe
If you want to talk about a “scoring” point guard in Virginia this season you have to start with Fragala. The John Champe PG averaged more than 30 points per game this season, including multiple 50 points games and a ridiculous 63 point outing early in the season. It all starts with his ability to stroke it from NBA range off the bounce, and once he hits a couple it’s on. He has great finishing ability at all three levels, and while he isn’t the most explosive guy at his position, he changes pace well and has that killer mentality where he doesn’t think anyone can guard him.
Iziah James | 5’11” | Cape Henry Collegiate
James has put up some eye popping numbers against some of the best teams in the state, including a 30 point outing against Oak Hill. He can shoot it from deep, create his own shot in transition or in the half court and he has that competitive fire where he wants to come at his opponent on every play. He is a volume shooter that is too ball dominant at times, but he has to do a lot for this Cape team, and when no one else wants to step up his competitive fire makes him take over.
Corey Pelham | 5’10” | Lake Braddock
If asked who the top ten shooters in the senior class of VA are, that list would have to include Pelham somewhere because the kid scorched nets from deep all season long. Whether he’s on or off the basketball, Pelham has effortless range from well beyond the three point line, and his mechanics are why. Even off the bounce, Pelham gets his feet set and into his shooting motion very quickly which allows him to shoot it with little space. He’s also a solid finisher at the rim and once he gets hot it’s going to be a long night for defenders.
Malik Marrow | 6’0” | Cape Henry Collegiate
Marrow’s has the ability to take over games once he gets things going, and he doesn’t need to be a volume shooter throughout the game to do so. He isn’t a super explosive athlete, but he’s a crafty ball handler that can get in the lane and make shots from all three levels. He plays with pace, finishes well over bigger players and has a toughness about him that makes him dangerous down the stretch.
Aaron Fowlkes | 6’1” | Benedictine
Fowlkes is ball dominant, but he can score the basketball in a number of different ways from all three levels. In transition he pushes the tempo and attacks the rim hard, and he can stop on a dime to shoot the midrange when the defense doesn’t commit. He can shoot the deep ball, has good size and can finish with both hands around the basket, and he has good burst and can play with pace.
Quivon Crittendon | 6’0” | Norcom
Crittendon transferred from cross town rival Wilson last season where he was the go-to option for three seasons. Now that he’s at Norcom with other scoring options, he may not be the go-to guy but he’s still filling it up efficiently. The lefty can shoot it from deep, play on or off the basketball and has good quickness to get in the lane.
