Last season it was 5A State Player of the Year Charles Falden, who built on a good junior season to become the leading scorer and go-to guy on a team that went to the state championship.
This season, 6’5” senior wing Cam Henry has stepped into that role, and he’s been thriving over the past few months in a number of different ways. In the Conference 12 Championship game, in which LC Bird won on a buzzer beater to avenge their loss to Varina last season, Henry played a key role in the first half, scoring 12 points on just five shots.
It was something he knew he had to do to get the bad taste out of his mouth.
“We came in this game knowing that we lost last year,” Henry said. “We had to get revenge on their court. Mario Haskett hit a big shot at the end of the game, and we knew he was going to do it because it did it last year against Henrico. Coach Manns drew up a great play and everyone did a great job executing it.”
Last season, Henry started as a scrappy role player that made the plays that didn’t always show up in the stat sheet. This year, he’s doing much of the same, but he’s also showing his versatility on the offensive end.
In the past month, Henry has been the Skyhawks’ leading scorer, scoring over 20 points in multiple games. It’s been a mix of his own improvement, along with a little kick in the butt from his Head Coach Troy Manns.
Henry has emerged as a division one recruit his senior season.“In the beginning of the year we were constantly swinging it and letting the ball determine who scored,” Henry said. “In the past month, since I play the four and I get a lot of mismatches, so when a big man is guarding me he’s told me to be aggressive and do what I can.”
“I’ve improved on shooting and my footwork. Getting by my man with one step, knowing how to get that inside foot around him on, and then it’s just decision making. Coach Manns and the rest of our staff have us hitting the weight room much more, and they’ve stressed going up strong. The strength is the biggest difference, cause now when I go around someone I’m looking to dunk the basketball.”
Henry’s recent play has caught the eye of a number of division two schools, as he’s picked up recent offers from Virginia Union, Catawba and Chowan. While he’d be a great fit at a division two, he has the size, skill and athleticism of a division one player, however his late growth both on and off the court has him under the radar in recruiting circles.
He mentions Hampton and JMU as D1 schools that have reached out to him the most, however he isn’t stressing the decision, just waiting for the right fit.
“I’m just looking for the right fit, somewhere that plays fast where I can go in and contribute early.”
Whoever sees the potential and gives Henry a chance has a shot at getting an immediate impact player late in the recruiting game.
