Clarion-Goldfield — The Cowboys are getting hot at the right time, and after starting the season 5-10 have begun to his their stride, winners of four straight. Junior guard Rhett Darland has been good during the win-streak, and it’s likely they’ll extend it to five tonight against a win-less Hampton-Dumont squad.
Des Moines North — It’s been an up-and-down season for the Polar Bears, and after a somewhat disappointing 6-5 start to the season, they’ve now won six straight, including wins over Valley, Mason City and Roosevelt. Sophomore sensation Tyreke Locure — Iowa’s 2nd-ranked 2019 — has been on an absolute tear during the win streak.
Xavier — After settling into what seemed would be a disappointing season, Xavier has all of a sudden turned red-hot. The 3A defending champs play a mostly 4A schedule, so that explains the less-than-stellar record. They were 4-9 up until two weeks ago, but they’ve won four straight — all over 4A schools — including triumphs over Cedar Falls and Prairie. Jackson Joens, Max Techau and Matthew Mims have all been tremendous during the four game streak.
Down
Ankeny — Even with one of the best players in the state, the CIML has been too much of a grind for Ankeny of late. The Hawks — led by senior guard Drew Maschoff — were formidable early this season, starting 7-6 in the ultra-tough conference. But four straight losses have been less than ideal for the Hawks. They’ll look to get back on track tonight at home vs. Roosevelt.
Grinnell — With three straight losses it would seem that the Tigers are underachieving a bit late in the season. But those three Ls came to some of the better teams in the state; Newton, Dallas Center-Grimes and Pella Christian. Still, with the likes of Sam Allen and Cade McKnight running the show, we expected the Tigers to be near dominant this season. They have four regular season games left to right the ship.
Davenport North — It’s now five straight losses for the Wildcats, which after starting the season a very promising 4-2, now find themselves at 6-11. They’ve played some tough teams during the recent skid, but have been been pummeled in five of the six. They have a decent shot of getting back in the win column tonight at Clinton.
