Iowa Player of the Week (9)
Rhett Darland (Clarion-Goldfield)
The Cowboys are getting hot at the right time, winners of four straight as they head into their final week of the regular season. An that success can be directly linked to Darland’s hot streak. He sank 5-6 from deep in a win over Iowa Falls-Alden last Monday, and was 14-15 from the free-throw line, finishing with 31 points. Then on Saturday, in a win over Humboldt, he dropped 26 points, connecting on six more triples.
Trey Hutcheson (Linn-Mar)
Just a sophomore, Hutcheson is the Lions’ leading scorer this season, which is impressive in its own right. But last week he turned it up a notch (or several notches), pouring in 42 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in a win over Waterloo East, then on Saturday getting it done defensively, swiping a season-high seven steals against Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
Spencer Lamb (Nodaway Valley)
Tuesday night in a one point loss to Mount Ayr, this sophomore busted out of his seams, scoring 27 points and nabbing 17 rebounds. He bettered that the next time he stepped on the floor, scoring a career-high 35 points and again grabbing 17 boards, this time in a Wolverines win.
Connor Gholson (Newton)
Newton came away with three impressive wins last week, over Chariton, Oskaloosa and Pella, and Gholson was his usual fantastic self and then some during the streak. He netted 15 3s in the wins, shooting an efficient 50 percent from deep. He upped his season scoring average to 20.9 per game after pouring in 25.3 points per during the three wins.
Brennan Sefrit (Bedford)
This kid is a freshman, and it’s safe to say he’s figured out how to be productive at the varsity level. He had a streak to remember last week, averaging 32 points on 49 percent shooting (54 3FG%), 6.5 rebounds, and 2 steals in two games. Sefrit is having maybe a better freshman season than anyone in the state.
