Trey Hinote (Greene County) — 26 points, 8-10 3s, 2 steals
Hinote is not only one of the slickest ball-handlers in Iowa’s 2019 class, but the kid can flat-out shoot the rock as well. He drilled a career-high eight 3s in this win over PCM, Monroe. Hinote has been one of Iowa’s best outside shooters this season.
Nick Finney (Pella) — 11 points, 13 assists, 7 rebounds
The Pella point guard was all over the place during the Dutch’s nine point win over rival Norwalk last Tuesday night. The 11 points were fine, and he rebounds very well from the guard spot, but those 13 assists are most eye-catching. That’s a season-high for Finney, and the sixth highest output this season in Iowa.
Tyler DeBondt (East Marshall) — 12 points, 15 assists, 4 rebounds
So you thought Finney’s 13 assists was impressive, DeBondt — with the benefit of having high-flyer Zaine Leedom now eligible — dished out 15 of them last Tuesday night’s win over BCLUW. DeBondt’s assists to turnover ratio is superb this season, 6.1:1 — wow
Jovonte Squiers (Lone Tree) — 19 points (8-12 FGs), 12 assists, 9 rebounds, 3 steals
This 6-foot Lone Tree point guard is certainly no stranger to this list, over the years his penchant for swiping steals and dishing out dimes has landed him here plenty. He was superb last Tuesday in the Lions’ win over Highland, Riverside. He messed around and nearly got himself a (nother) triple-double.
Hunter Strait (Ankeny Centennial) — 21 points, 5 assists, 4 steals, 4 rebounds
After transferring from Cedar Rapids Washington to Ankeny Centennial, this silky smooth point guard has been relatively quiet. But he erupted last Tuesday night during the Jaguars shellacking of Des Moines East. He nearly came away with the elusive 20-5-5-5 game.
Tyrese Nickelson (Waterloo East) — 37 points (13-23 FGs, 6-9 3s, 5-5 FTs)
This sophomore sensation has played in just the last three games for Waterloo East, and has averaged 24 points per while doing so. He blew up in a loss to Linn-Mar, dropping 37 on some very decent shooting.
Dylan Nichols (Orient-Macksburg) — 37 points (16-24 FGs, 5-10 3s), 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals
This must have been on one Nichols’ best games ever, and he’s had some doozys. The 37 points are not even a season-high — he dropped 41 back on Jan. 13th — but impressive nonetheless. We like the fact that he contributed on other ways too; rebounding and defense.
Tyreke Locure (Des Moines North) — 32 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 7 steals
We were at this game, and it was a treat to watch this sophomore magician at work. What’s most impressive, is he started out the game ice-cold, but about midway through the first quarter he caught fire, and never cooled down.
Joe Wieskamp (Muscatine) — 46 points, 15 rebounds
It’s starting to get a bit ridiculous in Muscatine, this kid is putting up 40-point games on a nightly basis. He’s 6-foot-6, shoots it lights out, and puts the ball on the floor very well. Not only is the Hawkeyes commit Iowa’s best player, but he’s one of the nation’s best players.
Kyle Lang (Mason City) — 41 points (15-17 FGs, 8-8 3s), 6 assists, 3 steals
He erupted for 20 first quarter points and finished with a new career-high 41 against Ankeny on Saturday so, ya, he was a shoo-in for this list. Lang is one of the more unsung great point guards in the state. But we feel he’s worthy of all-state consideration.
