Iowa City West: The state’s most talented group of guys are starting to hit their stride as we head into the latter third of the regular season. Connor McCaffery, Devontae Lane and Co. have now pushed their win-streak to five after two very impressive wins over Bettendorf and Cedar Rapids Prairie. They’re winning by an average 0f 25 points per game during the five game streak.
Dubuque Hempstead: We had a good feeling about these guys coming into the season, and they are now starting to live up to our lofty expectations. After a 4-3 start, the Mustangs have now won five straight – including a seven point win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy and a 19 point shellacking of defending 3A champ, Xavier. The Duax bothers (Lucas and Connor) have been sensational, and junior small forward Keith Johnson is one of Iowa’s best.
Western Christian: Perennial state tournament qualifiers Western Christian has pushed its win-streak up to double digits, and it’s now 10 and counting for Ben Gesink and Co. Most impressive is that the Wolfpack avenged an earlier loss to 3A contender Spirit Lake by handing them a 25-point loss last Friday night. Gesink is leading the way, averaging 16.7 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
Down
Pleasant Valley: It was going to be nearly impossible for the Spartans to duplicate their success from a season ago, but we certainly didn’t expect them to be 5-8 13 games into the season. After an OK 5-4 start, they’ve dropped four straight. They’ll try and right the ship tonight when they host Assumption.
Epworth, Western Dubuque: After starting the season 5-5, the Bobcats have found themselves skidding, losers of three straight. They have a super freshman with Calvin Harris, but that hasn’t been enough to keep this team over the .500 mark.
Laporte, Union City: It’s now six losses and counting for the Knights — a team that started the season 4-0. With senior leaders like John Boisen and Cael Lambe though, we expect this team to find their way again soon. They’ll try and get back into the win column tonight against Denver.
