Whitley played an integral role in Sarasota Riverview’s 29-3 season and Class 8A state title appearance. The Rams fell just short in a 61-57 loss to Coral Springs.
Seniors D.J. Bryant, Micah Fenn, Dominic Caldwell and D’Myron Wright all graduated and now Riverview is figuring things out with a younger core this season.
Whitley says his team is growing and learning but it is taking time.
The 6’4″, 193-pounder played at Sarasota Christian for both his freshman and sophomore year where the Blazers appeared in the state tournament.
Whitley and the Rams played in its second straight City of Palms Classic on Wednesday. Riverview lost to Dillard, but he called the experience “second to none.” He finished with a team-best 17 points.
“The City of Palms is an outstanding event and atmosphere where the best players and teams in the country come to compete,” he said. “It is an honor to be able to play in it for a second year and receive attention.”
This is how Whitley breaks down his own game.
“I’m a scorer. I score at all threes levels. My High school coach BJ Ivey says I’m one of the most efficient scorers he has every seen,” he said. “If my shot is off, I can drive. If there are shot blockers, I can shoot it. I would like to work on my ball handling and being more consistent from beyond the arc.”
He ranks No. 32 overall in the Prep Hoops Florida 2017 class rankings.
For the last two years, Whitley has played travel ball for Marcus McGee and Team M.O.A.M.
He called his summer amazing. He entered with one offer and left with 13.
In August, Whitley officially committed to UNC-Wilmington.
This kid may not hit every shot, but even when he misses, he continues to attack. Whitley’s never settle mentality will take him a long way. He has good instincts near the hoop and has a long range jumper.
He will fit right into a highly successful UNCW program. Whitley is a fun player to watch and someone who deserves more attention.
