Three Up
Brookings. The Bobcats are 3-0 after beating Huron by a score. Brennan Carlson and Josh Mohs both had big outings in the first two contests and then Carter Holm stepped up against Huron to push them to 3-0. Between those three, Devin Coughlin, and Drew Cole, Brookings is able to put on the floor that can math-cup with most anybody. Can they keep winning like they have been? Harrisburg is next followed by a rematch with Huron, and then Mitchell. That should likely mean a 5-1 or 6-0 record when they play at Brandon Valley on January 13th.
Groton Area. The Tigers have been dominating their opponents through five games. Margins of 17. 21, 32, 21, and 23 so far and in there is a key win over Redfield/Doland who has been very good. The Tigers have a trio of scorers that few can match in Bennett Shabazz, Sean Schuring, and Seric Shabazz, Bennett is coming off a recent 30 point game and all three of those players have had big number outings. The Tigers have too much to defend and several of them can shoot.
Scotland. Six-foot-6 Tanner Skorepa, a senior, is off to a great start. He put up 25 points and 14 boards in a 51-25 win over Burke/South Central, had another double-double of 13/13 against Viborg-Hurley in a win, and then had another in Tuesday’s win. Few in state can match that and it’s led his team to a 3-0 mark. Bon Homme is next, can they deal with Skorepa up front?
Three Down
Watertown. The Arrows were going to miss Nate Davis this year no matter what people try and say. He was a very talented guard and was key to how Watertown played. So far this year the Arrows are 0-3 but they have been competitive with O’Gorman and Aberdeen Central. Now the group has to figure out how to win. Alex Gauer has been solid for Watertown but needs some teammates to step up if they are to be as good as they would like.
Spearfish. The Spartan varsity is ten strong and seven of them are seniors which is good but most of the team is inexperienced so games with Red Cloud and Sturgis Brown were double figure losses. Spearfish plays Sturgis again next month so it will be interesting to see if this senior group is ready for this level and better prepared (experience wise) to win games against the area’s best teams. They did best 1-4 Custer by a point.
Elkton-Lake Benton. The Elks program has had their share of success but this year it’s been a rough ride so far. They are 0-4 and have recently been beaten by big numbers against Flandreau and Colman-Egan. They have faced three undefeated teams so far so things will get simpler but this is a team with four upperclassmen total (two seniors, two juniors) so they are young and inexperienced.
